Marion Segal Freed, a producer, editor, screenwriter and the former wife of actor George Segal, died Dec. 22 at her Century City home after a long illness. She was 77.
Freed, who was married to Segal for 25 years until their divorce in 1984, also was the step-sister of Susan Harris, the creator of TV’s The Golden Girls.

Freed served as an associate producer on Russian Roulette (1975) and Fun With Dick and Jane (1977), both of which starred Segal, and did editing work on the actor’s 1981 movie Carbon Copy as well as a pair of Terrence Malick films, Badlands (1973) and Days of Heaven (1978).
She also wrote or co-wrote three low-budget films that were directed by her husband Herb Freed — Subterfuge (1996), Paradise Lost (1999) and Child 2 Man (2000). The Freeds were married for 26 years.
In addition to Freed and Segal, survivors include her daughters Polly and Elizabeth and her brother Richard. A memorial service will be held Tuesday at Hillside Memorial Park and Mortuary in Los Angeles.
