Acclaimed playwright, screenwriter and author Michael Chaplin will be reading a number of selected True Stories written by local writers following a submission process.

The stories, no longer than 500 words, will be accounts of events that really happened once upon a time. They might be tales of the sea or the docks, the mine or the factory; stories of families, love or war; of crime, friendship, ghosts or weird coincidence. At this fantastic event there really will be no limits!

Audience members will then get the opportunity to discuss the stories with Michael Chaplin. It’s going to be an amazing night you don’t want to miss.

About Michael Chaplin

Michael Chaplin was born in 1951 in County Durham and is an acclaimed playwright, screenwriter and author.

His first career was in newspaper and television journalism, as a reporter on The Journal and then a current affairs producer in ITV, before becoming Head of Drama and Arts at Tyne Tees Television and Head of Programmes at BBC Wales.

Michael became a full-time writer in 1994 and has since written many series and films for television, dramas for BBC Radio 4 and 10 plays for Newcastle’s Live Theatre. The last of these, ‘Tyne’, was a hugely popular adaptation of his acclaimed book ‘Tyne View’, which tells the story of the great river that runs past The Word.
