A highly recommended comprehensive history of Rank's influence upon British cinema and business.
5 Stars
A highly recommended comprehensive history of Rank's influence upon British cinema and business.
Gareth Owen tells the story of J. Arthur Rank from his Methodist roots in the family flour business, through to his death in 1972 as Lord Rank, arguably Britain's most successful film producer. He takes the story further, to examine what happened to Rank's huge film and business empire, and how it stands today, as well as Rank's continuing philanthropic influence.Owen weaves boardroom politics, hard economics and often exclusive anecdotal tales of the world of film making at Pinewood (and other) Studios and pulls them together in an engaging and fascinating read, which is peppered with a number of photos, some of which the reader might not have seen before. This really is a comprehensive history of J. Arthur Rank both as a religious and charitable man, and also as a shrewd businessman and investor in the world of British film, written in a style which will appeal to both the casual reader and the keen student of cinema history.
