Product Description

Alex Fletcher (Hugh Grant) is a washed-up 80s pop star who's been reduced to working the nostalgia circuit at county fairs and amusement parks. The charismatic and talented musician gets a chance at a comeback when reigning diva Cora Corman invites him to write and record a duet with her, but there's a problem - Alex hasn't written a song in years, he's never written lyrics, and he has to come up with a hit in a matter of days. Enter Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore), Alex's beguilingly quirky plant lady, whose flair for words strikes a chord with the struggling songwriter. On the rebound from a bad relationship, Sophie is reluctant to collaborate with anyone, especially commitment-phobe Alex. As their chemistry heats up at the piano and under it, Alex and Sophie will have to face their fears - and the music - if they want to find the love and success they both deserve. The film co-stars Brad Garrett as Alex's steadfast manager, and Kristen Johnston as Sophie's sister, Rhonda. Newcomer Haley Bennett plays young, pop-princess Cora Corman. The Soundtrack features Hugh Grant and newcomer Haley Bennett

Writer-director Marc Lawrence's romantic comedy gently satirizes the music industry's past and present via Hugh Grant's Alex Fletcher, a has-been Rock of the '80s icon given another shot at the charts by young pop diva Cora Corman (newcomer Haley Bennett). Grant gives some surprisingly credible--if often gently tongue-in-cheek--performances in his musical debut; indeed, he carries better than half the soundtrack with his earnest vocal charms. The production gets key help from Fountain of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger, who contributes a delicious, loving send-up of Wham! courtesy of "Meaningless Kiss," the emotive piano confessional "Don't Write Me Off," and two versions of "Way Back into Love," the comeback ballad/duet that drives the story line. A playful demo version of the latter pairs Grant with co-star Drew Barrymore (playing the florist who becomes Fletcher's unlikely songwriting foil), while Grant's ultimate duet with young Bennett evokes contemporary pop conceits with a keen, affectionate flair that also graces the young singer's Britney-esque "Buddha's Delight," "Slam," and the more obviously snarky "Entering Bootytown." Rounding out the collection are a pair of complimentary tracks by Swedish pop acts: The Sounds' bouncy "Tony the Beat" and the club-slinky groove of Teddybears' "Different Sound." Highlighted by Grant's sympathetic vocals and a knowing musical sensibility that never quite lapses into mere parody, it's a pop-lover's delight from start to finish. --Jerry McCulley

The movie took me by surprise... despite the fact it had one of my favorite male actors in there, Hugh Grant, I was thinking this was just going to be one silly chick-flick that I'd have to sit through boringly and only went to make my fiancee happy. But as the movie rolled it's intro and I heard the head-bopping drum synthesization of some 80's song I'd never heard before but felt so familiar to... there it was, Hugh Grant singing with a bunch of other random guys, jamming out in some fictional 80's group named "PoP!" and I became enthralled with the movie and what a way it was to go.

ALl of the songs had Hugh singing in them and I was skeptical at first to see that it was really him who was singing all these, my fiancee thinking that he was dubbing to them as well but I kind of had faith in that Hugh was really singing them till I saw the credits, lo and behold, he really was performing each one on his own vocals. AMAZING! All of the songs sang in this movie were very well done in my opinion and have a wide range of variety despite the majority of them being sung by Hugh Grant and Haley Bennett, yet there was such a range it was mesmerizing.

You had your typical 80's pop sound, sort of like Duran Duran.

(Pop! Goes my Heart)

You had your Depeche Mode sounding groove.

(Dance With Me)

You had an Elton John type sound.

(Don't Write Me Off)

And then you have a great coupling of other sounds done by the Hugh.

The soundtrack is really great if you're looking into a sound that's new in a sense... yet old and familiar for all those great 80's lovers and fans not quite from the era.

This soundtrack is a must buy for the movie buffs but music enthusiasts alike.

A very good date film. A great throwback to those who love the 80's.In the movie Hugh(Alex) Grant being in a "Wham" like group in the 80's, actually learned to sing as did Drew. He also took piano as a child from Andrew Lloyd Webber's wife! Although the other actress playing the other pop star has an incredible singing voice and obviously has more seasoning, the two stars hold their own on the music dept. It is a fun movie along with Drews obsessive sister ( crazy , bra thrower for Alex) played by the tall actress from 3rd Rock, as well as the improvs from Grant which are in every movie he is involved in. He is funny, genius, and a pleasure to watch and work with. That being said It's amazing how many movie people sings for real and are enjoyable. Hugh Grant, Peter Capaldi, Craig Ferguson, James Cordon, Jeff Daniels, Steve Martin, Kevin Costner to name a few. And as always they make it look easy .

I loved this movie, and I have watched it over and over again. The CD is also one of my favorites that I listen to constantly. I was very impressed by the duet, "Way Back Into Love," with Hugh Grant and Haley Bennett. All of Haley's songs were great, especially "Entering Bootytown." This little girl is a cutie, and I expect to see her become a big hit when she releases her first CD, soon. I think Hugh's solo, "Don't Write Me Off," is very good. I had no idea he could sing so well, and Drew Barrymore didn't do bad, either, with her demo version of "Way Back Into Love." It was worth the money just to hear the Haley/Hugh duet of "Way Back Into Love." They made a great team, and the song has wonderful lyrics, with a haunting melody. Loved it, loved it, loved it!

The soundtrack is for one of my absolute favorite movies! I can actually picture in my mind the scene every song is taken from. I even enjoy the ones with Haley Bennett that are just a little more upbeat and everything. I didn't think Hugh Grant could sing but he does a good job on these songs. I think there's one on this album that might have gotten cut from the movie because I don't recall where in the movie it's played but it's okay. My favorites are Buddha's Delight, Will You Dance With Me Tonight from the movie, and Just A Meaningless Kiss song- I love that one too. It's nice they included both versions of Way Back Into Love on the soundtrack so you can hear the version by Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant, and then the one that is done with Hugh and Haley Bennett. If you're a fan of 80's pop, you'll like this one.

This is such a cute movie and the music was really good in a 1980's pop sort of way, that I found myself wanting to hear those cutsie songs again and again. Hugh and Drew and Haley Bennett sound wonderful on these songs. The Booty Town song lyrics actually turned out to be quite nasty, so I skip over that one, but it did fit the character she played.

If you are a fan of the movie, then this CD is a must-have! Surprisingly, Hugh Grant is a very talented singer, and his voice was very well suited to the songs he performed. I particularly enjoy the song "Meaningless Kiss", which is reminicent of George Michael's "Careless Whisper". "Pop Goes my Heart" is another favorite, it really captures the sound of 80's pop music. The songs on the CD were all just as they were performed in the movie, which is not always true of soundtracks. Overall, very highly recommended!

If you liked the music in the film 'Music and Lyrics' you'll love this. The songs are brilliantly written and very catchy. They are supposed to be a pastiche of everyone from Duran Duran, Wham and A-ha to Taylow Swift and Britney Spears and yet they are good enough to actually have been produced by the artists themselves. But if you haven't seen the DVD yet do that first! It's hilarious!
