A spirited brew of alt-country and southern rock crunch that is delivered with a spirited mix of vim and empathy.

It seems obvious they have influenced a lot of the Americana acts like drive by truckers, Ryan Adams and wilco but frustratingly never really got the acclaim that they deserved.

'smokin 100s alone' is a great song and the album is very good.

Smart Southern styled rock and roll stew
The Bottle Rockets are one of those bands whose hardcore devotees will always be puzzled by their lack of commercial success. Maybe smart non-pandering Southern rock-n-roll doesn't have an audience. Maybe the lack of a charismatic front man doomed them.....but dammit isn't it about the music? From the opening riff of 'Kit Kat Clock' to the great sing-along chorus of 'Turn For the Worse' this is uplifting butt-kicking passionate music to shake rattle and roll to! Other highlights include the broken down car tale of 'Indianapolis' with its playful reference to John Cougar, the wistful 'Things You Didn't Know', the not so close encounter with Dolly Parton of 'Perfect Far Away', the salute to small local neighborhood drinking bars like 'Slo Toms' and the diesel powered guitar of the title track.

Many people did not think this 3rd album for the Bottle Rockets was not up to the standards of the first two. I respectfully disagree

I think the opening song 'Kit Kat Clock' forever changed the destiny of The Bottle Rockets.

As stated from Allmusic.com:
"The Bottle Rockets' first two albums were two of the most influential and popular records of the alternative country movement, setting the stage for their third album, 24 Hours a Day, to be a popular breakthrough upon its 1997 release. After all, alt-country was beginning to emerge from the mainstream and establish itself as one of the cornerstones of adult alternative radio. It's too bad they dropped the ball with 24 Hours a Day, then, since it could have been the one that made their career."

This brings me to my original point, 'Kit Kat Clock' is the worst track (by far) on the album. The next few songs aren't much better, and a quarter through the album I'm sure most first-time listeners were unanimously thinking "This isn't nearly as good as The Brooklyn Side!"

So sad!!! The final 10 songs are magnificent, and I think with a little better song selection/organization this would have been a huge seller.......

Anyhow, forgetting the spilled milk, check out the brilliant guitar solo in 'Things You Didn't Know', and the foot-stomping beauty of 'Rich Man', and then if you're ready to rock check out the back-to-back barn-burners 'Perfect Far Away' and 'Waiting On A Train'. This is my favorite Bottle Rockets album!

One more note: this has the coolest album fold-out photo of all time.

Classic record. Brian Henneman's a punk in redneck clothes, much smarter and more engaged than you might think if you normally cringe at country. That said, this album has probably the fewest political statements of any Bottle Rockets record. Instead, we get 13 songs about love and loneliness, from the lighthearted rockers "Indianapolis" and "Perfect Far Away" to more ragged emotional songs like "Waiting On A Train" and "Smoking 100s Alone". The Bottle Rockets know their place, and it's right between the Stones and Skynyrd on your local dive's jukebox.
