A really enjoyable book for fans of Burns and Allen, those interested in early 20th century entertainment, or anyone who wants to read a real love story. It's one of the best books I've read in a while, and I'm sure I will read it again. Goodnight, Gracie... and George, too.
George Burns loved Gracie Allen and that love comes through loud and clear on every page of this wonderful book. Be careful. This kind of love is contagious. After reading this book, you'll love Gracie too!
In this book George Burns tells the story. His wife Gracie Allen was one of the best comedians of the time. Audiences loved Gracie before they loved Lucy.
We might not remember today that in 1940, as a publicity stunt, Gracie Allen ran for president. She threw her hat in the ring- literally-and became the candidate for the Surprise Party.
But Gracie despite being a trooper, was not content with the successes. She wanted to retire.
After eight years on television, Gracie Allen finally quit.
Burns returned to television the next year, but his new show was cancelled after just one season. The audience missed Gracie. He drifted into performing at night clubs. In some ways, this was a return to the vaudeville days. He eventually found success as a solo performer, but he missed having his wife at his side.
In 1964, she died of a heart attack. He continued performing, producing and writing books until he died at age 100.
This is the story of his life with Gracie. They were one of the most successful comedy teams of all time. They were also husband and wife both in front of the cameras and in real life. He plays loving tribute to the woman who stood beside him on stage for over thirty years.
