Born on 31 October 1961, Larry Mullen Jr. started his career in the early 1970s when his father, Mullen Sr. pushed him to join a Dublin marching band called Artane Boys Band. However, he was not much interested in it as their focus was more on learning to read sheet music, whereas Mullen wanted to play drums more.
He left the band after three weeks after several rules concerning his appearance – mostly his hair – was imposed on him. However, he saved money and with the help of his father, he got a drum kit.
Mullen Sr. also got him into a Post Office Workers Band that played orchestral melodies with percussion. He spent two years with the band.
He founded U2 on 25 September 1976 in his kitchen in Artane, along with Paul ‘Bono’ Hewson, David ‘The Edge’ Evans, and his brother, Dik, Adam Clayton, as well as Mullen’s friends Ivan McCormick and Peter Martin.
In 1996, when the band was recording their album Pop, Mulleb suffered intense back problems, therefore, the recording was delayed due to surgery.
Due to his injury, the team resorted to using electronic drum machines to develop the album; resulting in the album having more of an electronic feel.
The band is set to play a limited concert in September 2023 to open MSG Sphere at The Venetian in the Las Vegas Valley dubbed U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at the Sphere.
