Editorial Reviews

Carmen McRae was one of the finest and most highly-regarded jazz and sophisticated pop singers of the post-war era, renowned for her highly individual interpretation of the standards of the Great American Songbook. Born in Harlem of Jamaican parentage in 1920, she performed in New York's jazz clubs in the 1940s and made her first record until 1946. This great-value 97-track 4-CD set comprising her first release on Musicraft with Mercer Ellington, plus A&B sides of her singles on the Stardust and Decca labels through to 1958, including her releases with Sammy Davis Jr., and which include the titles from her "A Foggy Day" album for Stardust, plus all the titles from her albums "Carmen McRae" on Bethlehem, and "Torchy", "By Special Request", "Blue Moon" and "Afterglow" on Decca. It includes her chart entries from this era "Next Time It Happens" and "Skyliner". On these recordings, she is accompanied by orchestras arranged and conducted by Jack Pleis, Tadd Dameron, Vic Shoen and Ralph Burns, and star-studded jazz groups led by Mat Mathews and Tony Scott. It's a substantial and thoroughly absorbing overview of the first key decade and more of her career when she established herself as a highly distinctive and supremely talented vocal stylist across the jazz and pop spectrum.

Carmen McRae is a Goddess of Song! Highly recommended when you want to hear the meaning of lyrics by the passion in the presentation.

Great collection of early recordings of Carmen McRae, almost 100 tunes that added to my collection of this wonderful songstress. On these discs there are almost 6 complete albums along with a few tunes from an album she collaborated with Sammy Davis, Jr. There are also 3 dozen songs which were only released as single records.

The sound quality for most of the album was decent. None seem to be ‘rechanneled’ or digitally ‘enhanced’. There are a couple of tracks were less than be desired though. ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside’ has a ‘blip-burp’. At the end of ‘I Love the Ground You Walk On’ there is the beginning tip of another song. 2 of the tracks are not from the original albums. ‘Skyliner’ is a live recording from a 1957 concert at Newport, and ‘Sometimes I'm Happy’ is also from a live concert circa 1990. So, with that said, all of the tracks on this set are not correct.

I would have given this a 5 Star review, but with the above-mentioned reasons I will only give it 4 stars. Would I buy this set if I knew about this beforehand? Yes. The reason being that I was able to include about 50 early recordings, adding some of her first recordings to a pretty good my Carmen McRae library. The song being ‘Pass Me By’ when her stage name was Carmen Clarke as the singer with Mercer Ellington & His Orchestra in 1946 (something I would not have known of if I wouldn’t have purchased this set of discs).

Robbie MacDuff
5.0 out of 5 stars Great sounding CD compilation
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 8, 2021
Often overlooked, Carmen McRae was a superb singer. Scott Yanow (critic) says that she never matched the vocal magnificent of Ella and Sarah, but I don't agree. Her style, of course influenced by Billie, is subtle and dynamic at the same time. And she never did those horrible "rock" covers that Ella and Sarah indulged in. Okay the Atlantic albums (bar the "Live" one) touched on that, but not in the same gross way. Do you really like Ella singing I Heard It Through The Grapevine, which Jazz FM keeps playing? And Sarah doing The Beatles ... very questionable. So interesting that Billie was chastised for recording with strings, but Ella and Sarah could do nothing but. Listen to Carmen singing to Star Eyes and then listen to Carmen Lundy doing it ... so much empathy between the singers. Carmen was a pioneer, with her acerbic tone and behind the beat vocal. This is essential listening, even though some of the songs are in new century slightly odd ... but I still love Whatever Lola Wants! There is so much in the Carmen McRae catalogue and this is just the beginning of her career. But please note that it is very similar to the 2-CD compilation The Complete 1946 - 1955 on Harmonia Mundi from 2013. But this is more comprehensive.
