Excellent life story.

Davies managed to make a difficult story readable, which is not easy. I had to read it in chunks because the honest depiction of a difficult childhood full of mind games and abuse is not an easy thing to take in. There are interludes of humor and thoughtful contemplation of the facts. There were many times that I felt like an icy hand was gripping my heart. Davies gives you a good sense of the situation and the context of the actions. He conveys how a child feels who is trying to figure out what's what and why. Society doesn't really protect children from parents when it should, and it denies them recognition of the truth of their abuse. Everything gets papered over and no one believes the child. The happy thing about this story is that Davies was heard. The abuse he suffered was officially recognized when he went to officials as an adult. Too late to help him as a child, but still, he was heard. His truth was acknowledged. And that's a rare thing. A rare and precious thing. It wasn't an easy story for him to tell and it shouldn't be easy for anyone to read. There are no easy solutions, but society needs to do better.
I found the book very helpful personally. It helps to see that someone got some justice.

This book should be read by all. It takes you on a journey of self-exploration as the life of another is uncovered. Layers and layers of emotional trauma is cracked open to reveal the societal cover-up of which we ourselves are guilty.

Extraordinary memoir ----very well written --- truth telling without being sentimental.
And, for us readers who know Mr. Davies as a creative, very funny comedian, I don't know
that this "tells" us where his sense of humor came from ( it seems he was born with it).
More than anything, from my reading 'between the lines', so to speak,
it does tell me that compassion, resilience, & mature self reflection
can survive & emerge from the darkest of traumas experienced in life.
I think it is best appreciated if you also know even just a tiny bit of Mr. Davies' humor &
of his family life now.

I thank God for leading me to this book.

I am quite a fan of David Renwick, due to the brilliance of One Foot In The Grave. So, when I looked up and found another of his shows on BritBox, I was delighted. Jonathan Creek has become my very favorite television show and I wanted to learn more about Alan Davies (AKA Jonathan).

From the very first page, I was entranced. Not just because it's well-written, but it seems that Mr. Davies and I have lived parallel lives. For the first time in 50+ years, there was someone who could express my situation: what it was, how I viewed it, how I felt - even the way I shocked myself when I did things I didn't really understand. Most of all, for the first time ever, I knew that I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE LIKE ME.

Thank you, Alan. Having read your story, I feel closure about my childhood and have been able to cry for that little girl who lost her mum at 5 years old, whose father was a narcissist who manipulated and controlled and kept secrets. I believe you, my friend. And now, I feel that someone would believe me, too.

I've always loved Alan Davies, BUT you don't need any prior knowledge of his works as an actor or comedian to be able to find this memoir incredibly moving and thoughtful. ⠀

His is a story of a survivor of child sex abuse at the hands of his father; of a lonely boy grappling with grief over the loss of his mother (whose fatal illness and eventual death were shrouded with lies, secrecy and a perhaps well-meant but nonetheless unmistakable absence of respect). Of a man navigating trauma and its impacts on his life, and finally setting out to seek answers and share his story with honesty and sensitivity (but not without his signature dry humour) in the hope that one day, as he writes towards the end, "you will feel able to tell someone what they don’t know about you", and be believed.⠀

Yet it is also so much more than to which the sensationalised headlines are so quick to reduce. It is about resilience, hope, and above all, the profound and redemptive love he finds as he becomes a parent.⠀

Go get your copy, electronic or physical, and read it. I wouldn't say it is an "enjoyable" experience as such, with the trauma he detailed being too painful to take in at times; but it will stay with you and make you reflect on what you thought you knew about the subject matter.

Although repetitive and painful and after all why not because the subject is repetitive and painful, I enjoyed this book. It shocked me at times with its frankness, made me reassess A.Davies the comedian - and also caused me to revisit the sexual molestation of my own childhood. Why on earth do victims remain so silent for so long?

I only just discovered the actor Alan Davies in the television series Jonathan Creek, and was curious about him. Looked him up on Wikipedia and as soon as I saw the pat he had written a book about his life, I immediately got on amazon.com, and bought the Kindle version. Read it in two days. Through his innately humorous passages, you can feel his pain. I identify with him, not because I was sexually molested but because my husband’s dad sexually molested and abused him from ages two until six or seven years of age.
I’m glad he was able to eventually find an understanding wife and that he overcame his abuse to lead a successful life! Thank you, Alan, for being an encouragement to other people who were or are suffering from sexual predators!

I’m a big fan of Alan Davies from his work on the British quiz show Qi. This book was riveting and I couldn’t put it down. The reader gets a glimpse of his horrible childhood; and by the end of the book, I just wanted to give him a hug. There is some humour but lots of bravery on his part.

5.0 out of 5 stars Touching and unsettling heartfelt autobiography. A must-read!

Alan Davies has written a compelling and utterly engaging book. It is deeply unsettling and tinged with terrible heartache, but it is an important book because it shows how a damaged child can overcome their past to thrive, despite people and circumstances which could easily have derailed him. He’s a clever man, a deep thinker and a great comedian. I’m so glad I read this book - times passed in the blink of an eye. I couldn’t put it down. Beautifully written.
