Why choose EDF Energy?

EDF Energy is one of the UK’s Big Six energy supplier. It was founded in 2002, which means it has more than 20 years’ experience of keeping UK homes warm and their lights on.

It’s parent company, simply ‘EDF’ (Électricité de France), is owned by the French state. This could arguably provide the company with security during difficult times.

EDF Energy may be attractive to environmentally conscious customers. It offers the option to install solar panels to your home and produce your own energy, while all EDF Energy’s electricity is zero carbon, generated from wind, nuclear and solar sources.

EDF Energy tariffs

There are several types of tariff available. Here’s how EDF Energy prices depend on the tariff you’re on:

  • Standard variable tariffs (SVTs) — the price per unit of energy can vary in line with wholesale market fluctuations. This means your price may rise or fall based on market trends.
  • Dual fuel tariffs — bundles your gas and electricity costs into a single payment.
  • Pre-payment tariffs — you pay for your energy upfront, enabling you to determine the amount you pay each month. Keep in mind that when your credit runs out, your supply will be cut off until you top it up. It's important to note that historically, pre-payment tariffs have had a higher cost per unit of energy (kWh) compared to direct debit payments.

There are some types of EDF Energy tariff that aren’t currently available:

  • Fixed-rate tariffs — secures your energy price (per unit of energy) for a contracted period. However, the total amount you pay can still fluctuate based on your usage.
