Mark’s father was Tom Harmon, who won the Heisman Trophy in college football. Mark’s mother was Elyse Knox, who was an actress and model. His two older sisters were actress-model Kelly Harmon and late actress Kristin Nelson.
Now, Tom Harmon won his Heisman Trophy while playing for the Michigan Wolverines. Mark ended up transferring from one college to UCLA for his 1972 and 1973 college seasons. But his acting career received a boost thanks to making appearances on shows like Adam-12, Police Woman, and Emergency. He also worked on two Jack Webb projects: 905-Wild and Sam, which was a show about a man and his K-9 companion.
Harmon, though, received accolades and an Emmy nomination for his role in Eleanor and Franklin: The White House Years.
The Future ‘NCIS’ Star Joins Cast of ‘St. Elsewhere’
As we enter the 1980s, Mark Harmon joins the cast of the NBC drama Flamingo Road. But that show was canceled after two seasons, so Harmon moved along to St. Elsewhere for three seasons. But in 1986, Harmon himself probably was scratching his head. See, he was named “Sexiest Man Alive” by People Magazine.
Harmon has done some film work yet did not receive the same attention that he did on TV. So, his focus would return to the small screen.
Longtime Harmon fans will know that he appeared in NBC’s Reasonable Doubts and ABC’s Charlie Grace. Yet he appeared for four seasons on the NBC procedural Chicago Hope. Harmon had a short story arc on The West Wing in 2002. That, in turn, would lead Harmon to become part of the NCIS universe.
