I was lucky to get this CD; it was used but in great condition. Brian Culbertson’s talent shows throughout. A great variety of songs performed in different ways. I’ve been enjoying it daily.
This is a terrific Christmas album for those who love a jazzy upbeat to their holiday carols! One would never know it was produced and recorded 15 years ago, it's so "now" in it's popularity. Bryan Culbertson is truly a great musician and plays many instruments and he's gathered really great artists on this album.
Most Christmas albums/CD are trite and uninspiring; certainly not imaginative. At best the production hack out familiar tunes in a format akin to "elevator/mall" fare.
This is NOT the case with Brian Culbertson's "Soulful Christmas". Refreshingly, Brian truly conveys a very personal and "living" tribute to his Holiday memories...sharing a deeply-rooted belief in the spirit of humanity. Whether your take on the Christmas holiday is a sacred or secular one, or a blend of both, this production will intensify your experience. Each song stands on its own; unique in arrangement, exquisitely performed, yet keeping just enough of the root of the tune to recall old memories and to create be ones. Definitely a keeper that you'll play over and over!
My first BC album and I am blown away. Got it two days ago and I can't stop listening to it. I have dozens of holiday albums of all styles and this one is easily in my top five! Want something a little reflective, it's on here; more up tempo, got that too. Funkified - check; big band - check that too. This CD won't put you to sleep with a bunch of the same tempo/style that quickly fades into the background, it is a GREAT mix of holiday treatments.
'Intro' is a 'warm-up' to 'Joy To The World' and it was nice; 'Joy To The World' is a nice, jazzy song and the piano by Brian Culbertson is great! I also liked the choir's vocals, drums and horns; 'Deck The Halls' is another nice song and I liked the piano, drums and horns; 'Jingle Bells' is a very smooth yet jazzy song and I liked the piano, drums and horns; I also liked the intro with the radio playing as well as the choir; very nice; 'The First Noel' is a lovely song with piano by Brian and strings; 'All Through The Christmas Night' featuring Michael McDonald is a very nice yet soulful song with vocals by 'Blue-Eyed Soul' singer Michael McDonald and the choir, the piano by Brian and the drums were very nice; 'Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer' is a good song with nice piano by Brian, guitars, drums and horns; 'Angels We Have Heard On High' is a lovely song with piano by Brian, drums, horns, strings and guitars; 'Some Children See Him' featuring Michelle Culbertson is a lovely song with Brian on piano and lovely vocals by Brian's wife, Michelle; 'Little Drummer Boy' is a nice song and I liked the drums intro as well as Brian on piano; very nice; 'This Christmas' is a song written and sung by the late singer/songwriter Donny Hathaway and Brian's version is very nice with Brian on piano, drums, guitars and horns; 'Silent Night' featuring Marc Nelson is nice and the vocals by singer Marc Nelson is nice as well as Brian on piano. Only two more months until Christmas and I felt as though I wanted to get into the Christmas spirit by listening to Smooth Jazz musician Brian Culbertson and I am glad I did! Very lovely! REST IN POWER to singer/songwriter Mr. Donny Edward Hathaway (October 1, 1945-January 13, 1979): 'You may be gone but you will never, ever be, forgotten.'
You probably thought that all Christmas songs sounded the same and that there really is no use acquiring any artiste's seasonal cd. I thought so too, but Brian Culbertson has brought a refreshing outlook and made it worthwhile. I recommend the cd highly without ant reservations.
