This is the largest of the Five Grand Palaces built by the Joseon dynasty and was the home of the royal family and the seat of government where the ministers managed the kingdom with the emperor. The present structure is a reconstruction and has suffered major destruction twice. Both times by the Japanese in the Imjin War and during the Colonial period.

The architecture is very much Joseon. There are many grand buildings, although the grandest is of course the Throne Hall where the Korean Emperor held court. It appears to be two storeys in height, but is a single room with an exceptionally high ceiling. If you time your visit correctly, there are two changing of the guards a day. The ceremony is unlike anything I’ve seen before. It’s a grandiose event that involves over a hundred people. The palace complex also has an attached museum, which is open even on the day the palace is closed. I highly recommend visiting the museum as it has many items on display that used to be held in the palace itself. English language guides are offered free and I highly recommend them.

This shopping area turns into a fun night market with great energy. Lot's of food choices and the usual tourist trinkets. A little pricey but still good fun and value.

The entrance and surrounding area has several monumental sized memorials to the fallen of South Korea and all the Allied Nations that helped defend against the North Korean Invasion.

The semi-circular plaza leading up to has monuments specific to each allied nation, with a flag marking the country and a marker to describe the contribution that each country made. The 1st floor focuses on the background of the Korean War and the main battles. Sections are divided into major battles, notable individuals, units of the ROK and a run through the course of the war from the retreat to the Pusan Perimeter, through the pursuit to the Yalu River and finally the stalemate at the 38th parallel. The second floor is split between the UN and allied contingent that supported South Korea, and the Korean Armed Forces. The former is a poignant thanks. The latter has many excellent exhibits and information about the 4 Korean military arms. There's also videos that come across as a little jingoistic.

Overall, the place is a fine monument to the fallen of South Korea, while the museum is a fine military and history exhibition. Much of the war is described from the POV of the South Korea so perhaps a bit one sided, but that’s not unusual for national war memorials.

This is a great place from which to see the amazing sights of the new and old parts of bustling Seoul. Unfortunately for us, it was a rainy day when we visited.

Changdeokgung Palace is one of the Five Grand Palaces built by the kings of the Joseon dynasty. Like the other palaces in Seoul, this one also offers guided tours in English 3 times a day, so it’s worth scheduling 1 or 2 days around these times. I also highly recommend the English tour as the guide was very good and gave a lot of information not found in the palace printed guides. The printed leaflet also has QR codes for audio guides as an alternative. I only used it once while waiting for the tour to start, but the commentary was very good.

The palace was apparently the primary residence of the Korean Royal Family thanks to a combination of its spacious gardens and mountain views. The grandest building is the Injeongjeon or throne hall and contains the throne for the Korean king. Being the most important building, it also has the most chiwens of all the buildings in the complex. Another building to look out for is SeonJeongjeon Hall, which is the only remaining building in the complex to have blue glazed tile, thanks to expensively imported cobalt. Overall, I’d say this palace is definitely one of the best things to see in Seoul as an outstanding example of Far Eastern palace architecture.

Much of the ground floor is dedicated to Korean history. One side is mainly exhibitions on the kingdoms of Korea all the way up to the Korean Empire, while the other side covers the stone age up to mediaeval Korea. If you want to know about the history of Korea condensed into about a dozen rooms via exhibits, then this would be the place to see it. The 2nd floor also has some amazing exhibitions especially on Buddhist art and culture, and the stunning “Room of Quiet Contemplating”

There's a fair bit of free parking and they're quite a few toilets and shops in the area.

if you wish to climb up you do have to pay there is a free walking path that gives you a nice view of it I walked up to the top there must have been about 500 steps it took me a bit of time but it was worth it I went as the sun was setting and I was able to see the sun setting on the east side of the island it was worth the walk up the walk down was a lot easier. still a lot of steps but also a lot of section of just down hill path which was nice on the legs

Bukhansan National Park is a paradise for hikers. There are hundreds of trails with varying levels of difficulty, offering views of both mountain peaks and waterfalls.

Buses heading out of the city to various park entrances are filled with hikers decked out in what looks like professional gear. So don’t worry - you won't be alone on the trails.

Two days ago, we did a 4 km trail on the city wall that took us to the top of one of Bukhansan's relatively low mountain peaks. It was a sweat-inducing affair.

Yesterday, we hiked a 2 x 2.5 km route to Songchu Falls. You can find the trail on AllTrails dot com. The difficulty is moderate; only the very end of the trail becomes somewhat challenging, but most people in good shape will be able to complete it.

If 5 km sounds a bit short, there are several marked trails so you can pass Songchu Falls and go higher up in the park. Try googling the Obong Loop.

Located very near my hotel, I frequented this attraction for dining and eating. Simply watching the crowd as I had my coffee break in the area was interesting. There are small alleys where the restaurants, shops, etc are located.

At the main streets, I noted art galleries, spa, hanok shops, 711 stores, etc. Glad that it is near my hotel, no need for bus or metro rides to reach it.

Amazing place, really good place just to roam around, but need to be respectful of locals. I arrived at 730am so there was no-one else around, by 9am the masses were starting to arrive. Well worth a visit.

A very photogenic spot where there's a waterside walk along a waterway and runs along a considerable distance. It's pretty both day and night, but best to visit at night when the lights are lit up against the dark backdrop.

Long stretch of beach and perfect for a stroll on a cooling day. Quiet on a weekday morning.
There was a sand castle competition with several castles being built.
Walked all the way to the coastal blue train station at Mipo.
