So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
It was twenty years ago today
Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play
They've been going in and out of style
But they're guaranteed to raise a smile
So may I introduce to you
The act you've known for all these years
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
We're Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
We hope you will enjoy the show
We're Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Sit back and let the evening go
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
It's wonderful to be here
It's certainly a thrill
You're such a lovely audience
We'd like to take you home with us
We'd love to take you home
I don't really wanna stop the show
But I thought that you might like to know
That the singer's gonna sing a song
And he wants you all to sing along
So let me introduce to you
The one and only Billy Shears
And Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play

My, this is a great song.
Too bad the other Beales didn't want to go along with Paul's idea of a pretend band (Sgt. Pepper's L H C Band) Maybe they would have come up with some other great songs.
This is my most favorite Beatles' song and album. Both are great.
not my favorite beatles song (that goes to i am the walrus) but still one of my favs
Who the hell is Billy Shears?
Billy Shears is Ringo alter personalty for Sgt.Pepper.
Two explanations Cassanova
1 The more believable explanation is that Billy Shears is just the persona that Ringo took for the mock band called Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
2 This is the explanation used by Paul Is Dead believers. The supposed name of the Paul-lookalike that took Paul's place after his "death" was William (Billy) Campbell. What the Paul Is Dead believers believed that Billy Shears is a play on the phrase "Billy's Here", meaning that William Campbell is here now and taking the place of Paul.
has anyone here seen the movie of this name? It is the best thing ever...
oh that's so godamned like a ghost story BrainDamage, for some reason it freaked me out....billy's hereshivers....yeah this song rocks, it's one of their best more rock style ones i rekon.
...the title track of the best record of all times...
Well, I came up with my own Billy Shears theory today.... I think it's original ( at least it is for me) anyway. William = Will = Billy Shakespeare could = Shears.... It's a very long shot, but Billy Shears = Will Shakespeare, would be a cool reference, just an idea
