Update:
Kelly arrival close

Newcastle's first senior signing of the summer transfer window is expected to be Lloyd Kelly, a free agent following the expiration of his Bournemouth contract.

The 25 year-old Bristol-born player was pictured by Sky Sports en route to the first part of his club medical in London on Wednesday.

Kelly will be reunited with former managers Eddie Howe and Jason Tindall at Gallowgate plus ex-Cherries coach Graeme Jones.

The left-sided central defender played the first of 48 games for Bristol City in 2017, making a 13m switch to Bournemouth ahead of the 2019/20 campaign - and a home debut during Newcastle's 4-1 win there.

141 appearances for the ex-England U20 and U21 international at the Vitality Stadium include 54 in the Premier League (47 starts).

NUFC membership: further information

The official club website has a pre-registration option for next season's membership scheme online here

The scheme launches this Friday (14th), with three options: The Mags, The Mags+ and Junior Mags.

Unconfirmed details have appeared online, with adult options claimed to be 37 for standard and 47 for plus. The plus option looks to have various benefits bundled in but none related to ticketing, which is claimed to be the same for both levels.

Engineering feet....:
Sock offer

Newcastle-based Sock Council offer free UK shipping when three or more pairs of their NUFC-inspired sock range online here are purchased this week.

To qualify for free UK shipping, a minimum of three pairs from that range must be ordered together to the same delivery address. Add code DOTCOM at checkout to activate the deal, which runs until Sunday June 16th.

We had three pairs of socks up for grabs in a giveaway and asked you to name the former Magpie whose father
guided Bromley into the Football League last season.

Most folks knew that it was Freddie Woodman's dad, Andy, who did the deed and the name of the winner will appear here on Thuraday.

Ex-Mags:
U's acquire Watts

League One Cambridge United have completed the free transfer signing of Kelland Watts after the defender's long association with Newcastle United ended.

Now 24, Kell joined the Magpies back in 2008 and played at Academy and reserve level, belatedly making his competitive senior bow for the club against Liverpool in the Premier League during 2020.

A succession of EFL loans meanwhile saw him rack up 140 league and cup games for Stevenage, Mansfield Town, Plymouth Argyle, Wigan Athletic (twice) and Peterborough United.

Watts is the second recently-released Magpie to have found a new club after Dylan Stephenson joined National League side Dagenham & Redbridge.

The 21 year-old forward spent the second half of last season on loan at National League North side South Shields, following a temporary posting to Scottish Championship side Hamilton Academical in 2023.

Appearing for United in first team team friendlies without ever making a senior competitive bow, Stephenson has also agreed a two year deal at the Daggers.

PS: Following his exit from SJP, goalkeeper Jude Smith has joined League Two Carlisle United on a two year deal.

Internationals:
Euro quartet confirmed

Kieran Trippier and Anthony Gordon were confirmed as being in Gareth Southgate's final squad for the European Championships in Germany when the England manager announced his 26-man squad.

Trippier will wear the number 12 shirt, while Gordon has been assigned number 18.

Martin Dubravka and Fabian Schar are also Euro-bound with Slovakia and Switzerland respectively.

Eight SJP old boys are also off to Euro 2024:

Belgium: Matz Sels
England: Ivan Toney
Netherlands: Gini Wijnaldum
Scotland: Grant Hanley
Serbia: Alexsandar Mitrovic
Spain: Joselu, Mikel Merino, Ayoze Perez

(Slovakia omitting Lubo Satka and there was no place for Kevin Mbabu in the final Swiss selection).

Coral

Portugal 8/1
Spain 8/1

Update:
Exit looms for
Wembley winner

As anticipated, Premier League-bound Southampton are in the process of concluding the permanent transfer of Ryan Fraser from Newcastle, following his successful loan spell at St. Mary's Stadium last season.

The 30 year-old former Scottish international is in the final year of his contract at SJP, playing 44 times and scoring eight goals last season in league and cups as the Saints won the Championship playoff final.

The departure of fellow midfield discard Isaac Hayden from Gallowgate is also nearing, with the 29 year-old expected to reach a financial settlement on the remaining two years of his Magpies deal.

Spending the latter part of last season at QPR, he's keen on remaining at Loftus Road, although the subject of interest from other second tier clubs.

Update:
'Keeper claims grow

The anticipated departure of Martin Dubravka and confirmed exit of Loris Karius this summer has brought renewed speculation over who will be signed to vie with Nick Pope as Newcastle's first-choice goalkeeper.

The current name in the frame is James Trafford, the 21 year-old, 6 foot 6 inch custodian who has just endured a maiden Premier League campaign at Burnley and is reportedly the subject of a 16m bid.

Trafford is predicted to be the latest player to follow a well-trodden path from Turf Moor to St. James' Park - following Jeff Hendrick, Chris Wood and Nick Pope from the Clarets to the Magpies in recent seasons.

The Cockermouth-born player joined Manchester City as a youngster in 2015, making his senior competitive debut on loan to Accrington Stanley in August 2021.

An 18 month loan to Bolton Wanderers followed, returning to Burnley last summer fresh from European U21 Championship victory with England alongside current Magpie Anthony Gordon.

Making a 19m switch from City to Burnley ahead of their Premier League return, he made the last of his 28 top-flight appearances for them in March.

A similar fee is claimed to be under discussion with Newcastle at present, with an unspecified percentage payable to Manchester City due to a sell-on clause.

Sela spectacular:
South bank show

Saturday night saw club sponsors Sela organise a free event on the river Tyne that they described as a "celebration of the club, the city and the fans".

Gateshead's Baltic Flour Mill and the river itself became giant projection screens, spectators gathering on the Newcastle side as iconic local images were displayed.

In addition to the Blaydon Races and St.James' Park itself, Alan Shearer, Kevin Keegan, Bobby Moncur (with the Fairs Cup in his hand), Gazza, Jackie Milburn, Tino Asprilla, Hughie Gallacher and Sir Bobby Robson were all immortalised.

More contemporary footage meanwhile included goals from last season, NUWFC and the new 2024/25 home kit.

for a rambling explanation of sorts....

On This Day in History
12th June

Born Or Died:

1960 Ray Ranson born, St.Helens, Lancashire. (1988-93)

Full back who began his career as an apprentice with Manchester City, debuting for their first team in December 1978.

Appearing for City in both the 1981 FA Cup Final and replay, Ranson moved on to join Birmingham City in 1984 before Jim Smith took him back to the top flight with United in December 1988.

Signed in an attempt to shore up our leaky defence, Ranson made his Magpies bow with fellow new arrival Kenny Sansom in a 2-1 Boxing Day win at Sheffield Wednesday.

Relegation still followed that season however, Ray netting the only goal of his SJP career at the Leazes end against QPR - attempting to scale the fence in his glee.

Remaining with United, Ranson was a regular starter under Smith but overlooked by his successor Ossie Ardiles, returning to the side under Kevin Keegan as demotion to Division Three was avoided in 1992.

Making his final first team appearance in a 2-1 away win against Bristol Rovers early in September 1992, Ray returned to Maine Road the following January and signed for Reading in the summer of 1993.

Working in insurance after injury forced him to retire from playing in 1995, Ranson went on to found his own company and develop a form of insurance-underwritten lease deal that allowed clubs to make new signings and pay for them from future earnings.

His Guernsey-based company  Registered European Football Finance (REFF) was credited with a number of deals at Leeds, notably the Rio Ferdinand transfer.

However, changing circumstances at Elland Road and a drop in fortunes on the field proved costly for Leeds, who ultimately paid the price for living beyond their means.

Ray was also part of a consortium who tried unsuccessfully to buy Aston Villa in 2004 - similar moves to acquire Southampton and Manchester City also failing.

However, Ranson was successful in his bid for Coventry City in 2007, as the Midlands club was set to enter administration.

He installed himself as Chairman at the Ricoh Arena - once the takeover by his SISU Group was concluded - sacking future Magpies assistant boss Iain Dowie and bringing in Chris Coleman, in a successful fight against relegation from the Championship.

However, Ranson stepped down as Chairman in March 2011, with the Sky Blues in financial and footballing strife.

Despite announcing that he was to stay on as the club's football consultant, he had severed all connections with the Sky Blues within days.

By 2015 Ranson was fronting investment bankers London Sport Exchange Ltd, who aimed to "match teams with hedge funds looking for fixed-income returns."

What Else?

1975 Blackburn Rovers boss Gordon Lee was unveiled at a press conference in succession to Joe Harvey at Gallowgate - although Rovers were far from happy, having initially denied United permission to approach their Manager.

Lee confirmed that he would retain Harvey's existing staff: Chief Scout Len Richley and coaches Ron Lewin and George Herd.

Among the initial public comments made by him was this telling one:

"I have no problems with players - I make them work hard whoever they are and if they don't I tell them - be it Malcolm Macdonald or anyone else. You can only work with players if you gain their respect and that applies at any level of football."

Although guiding his side to the League Cup Final the following season, the sale of Macdonald to Arsenal would fatally fracture Lee's relationship with the fans and he quit to take charge of Everton in early 1977.

As a measure of his popularity we refer you to a game at SJP in the early 1990s against Leicester City.

Lee was on the Foxes' coaching staff at the time and in the latter stages of the game ventured from the away dugout for the first time, to collect a stray ball.

He was promptly booed from all four corners of the ground. Not forgotten, not forgiven.

1985 United's White Hart Lane- bound winger Chris Waddle won his seventh full England cap in a 3-0 friendly victory over West Germany in Mexico City.

1992 Newcastle's first signing of the summer was confirmed as Paul Bracewell, the midfielder making the short journey from wearside where he had been club captain.

Out of contract and only offered a 12 month extension by the mackems, the 29 year-old defected after a phone call from Kevin Keegan - and the offer of a two year deal.

In pre-Bosman days, a 250,000 transfer fee was imposed by a Football League Tribunal.

1997 Kenny Dalglish brought in former Celtic manager Tommy Burns as his new assistant. Sadly Tommy lost his battle against cancer in May 2008, aged 51.

1998 As the news broke of the capture of Stephane Guivarc'h, a worldwide television audience and 55,077 fans  in Marseilles saw him play for twenty minutes before being withdrawn through injury. After his early departure, France managed to beat South Africa 3-0.

2000 A blank night for Alan Shearer, who collected his 61st cap and captained England as they lost 3-2 in Eindhoven to Portugal in their European Championship opener.

2003
Nicos Dabizas made his 61st senior appearance for Greece as the Ukraine were defeated 1-0 in Athens

However, the United player was subsequently involved in a car accident when the car he was driving hit a traffic light pillar in Athens before catching fire.

Dabizas made a hasty exit from the car and, according to the Greek football federation website, was treated in hospital for cuts to his forehead and nose and had his broken right arm placed in a cast.

2006 Craig Moore's selection for Australia against Japan made him the 18th player to have had the honour of appearing in the World Cup finals while a current Magpie.

Moore marked the occasion with a 57th minute booking and was replaced on the hour. It ended 3-1 to Australia in Kaiserslautern.

2007 A day of speculation as pre-season friendlies against Sampdoria and Carlisle United were reported but were yet to be confirmed (both took place).

Meanwhile, David Rozehnal, Tal Ben Haim, Habib Beye, Sami Hyypia and Leighton Baines were all alleged transfer targets for Sam Allardyce. Two out of five arrived.

2010 Appearing in an unfamiliar right back role, Jonas Gutierrez faced old boy Obafemi Martins as Argentina began their World Cup Finals campaign with a 1-0 win over Nigeria at Ellis Park, Johannesburg.

2017 From Sky Sports News:

"We understand NUFC have received significant interest in recent weeks from foreign investors - including one party from China.

"We believe Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is now considering all options available amidst real interest from Chinese investors."

Takeover Rumour Part 27 turned out to be like all the others at that point.

2017 The departure of five first team players as free agents was confirmed: Vurnon Anita, Sammy Ameobi, Yoann Gouffran, Lubo Satka and Haris Vuckic.

2021 Fabian Schar appeared for Switzerland in their opening group stage game at the delayed Euro2020 finals.

It finished 1-1 against Wales in Baku.

2022
Another goal for United's Santiago Munoz at the Maurice Revello Tournament in France, as Mexico U21s beat Colombia 2-0 in the 3rd/4th place playoff.

2023 United completed a deal to sign 18-year-old Gambian forward Yankuba Minteh from Danish side Odense Boldklub (OB). The fee was estimated at 7m.
