Biography

Bogislaw (Bogusław in Polish) was born before 1258, the eldest son of Barnim I, Duke of Pomerania, and the only child of his second wife, Margareta von Werle. He succeeded his father as Duke of Pomerania in Wolgast in 1278.

He married firstly, before 14 December 1278, Mechtild von Brandenburg (born 1257, died before 1284), daughter of Johann I, Markgraf von Brandenburg and his wife Jutta von Sachsen. There was no issue from this marriage.

He married secondly, between about 1283-1287 (a dispensation was issued by Pope Nicholas IV 24 February 1290, because they were related in 4th degree), Margareta von Rügen (born about 1265-1270), the daughter of Wizlaw II, Fürst von Rügen, and his wife, Agnes von Braunschweig.

They had five children:

  1. Eufemia, born about 1286-1288, married about 1300-1304, Christoffer II Eriksen, King of Denmark;
  2. Margareta, born about 1286-1288, married (1) 1299, before November, Nikolaus I von Mecklenburg, Herr zu Rostock (died 25 November 1314); (2) about 1316-1324, dispensation issued 12 September 1324, Johann I, Duke of Steinau;
  3. Wartislaw, born 1291, succeeded his father as Duke of Pomeranai in Wolgast;
  4. Jutta, Abbess of Krummin, died after 12 March 1336;
  5. Elisabeth, married 1316, before 16 June, (dispensation issued 1 July 1346), Erich I, Duke of Sachsen in Ratzeburg und Lauenburg, and died after 16 October 1349.

Bogislaw died 19 February 1309, and was buried in Marienkirche, Stettin.[1]
