A Perfect Getaway (2009). Do you consider it a horror movie?

A Perfect Getaway used to be one of my favorite movies. I remember watching it with my family, and then we all immediately rewatched it again to catch all the details we missed. I think it is a smartly written action/adventure/thriller/mystery/horror movie with great performances.

If you haven't seen this movie I recommend a watch, especially with it just dropping on Hulu. The tagline is: 6 strangers, 2 killers, no getting away. It stars Steve Zahn (Joy Ride) and Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil, The Fourth Kind) as a newlywed couple on their honeymoon in Hawaii. They meet other couples played by pre-fame Chris Hemsworth (Chris Hemsworth) and Marley Shelton (Scream 4, Valentine), and another couple played by Timothy Olyphant (The Crazies, Scream 2) and Kiele Sanchez (she is the least high-profile of the cast but she was the standout character in my opinion. Actually she was in Purge Anarchy that is a good one).

It takes place 100% on the island of Kauai, Hawaii on the beautiful Kalalau Trail. The production team uses this rainforest/jungle scenery to their advantage, because every single shot is so vibrant and colorful. All you get for the 1hr38min runtime is sandy beaches, blue oceans, waterfalls and sea caves, lush green trees, and beautiful mountains.

The reason I categorize it as a horror movie is definitely due to the final act. There are so many gory moments, plenty of spine chilling moments, and it really becomes a survival horror movie at that point. It's a slow burn for the most part, and it's a dialog heavy film but that's what makes it so much fun to rewatch again and again. I've seen it at least ten times now and I catch something new every time.

Spoiler, kind of below:

I know we're not supposed to mention twists. A lot of people will say they saw the twist coming from a mile away, some even saying the knew based on the trailer. I just know I watched it and the moment the truth is revealed it sent chills down my spine which doesn't happen a lot.

If you go watch the trailer on YouTube, it straight up says there's a twist you won't see coming. I was pretty pissed off when I saw that trailer at the movie theater, because when they said that and I eventually saw it, I knew from jump what it was.

Agreed

I really enjoyed this one, it was a tad predictable but it took you along for a ride and it was fun. Plus, Timothy Olyphant is always so charismatic!

I haven't seen it in forever and I remember hating it. I distinctly remember the camera following the killers while they're alone for a while and them acting like they're not the offenders at all, which was dumb.

I think you a referring to the tent scene?

In the killers defense, Nick And Gina were pretty fucking weird. He killed a goat with a bow and arrow and she sliced it open in front of them. Cliff and Sydney were disgusted.

I think in the tent Sydney is telling Cliff she really wants to get away from them, because 1) they are weird and 2) they seem more badass, like they "are really hard to kill" as they say they are, maybe they won't be easy targets like the last couple. Cliff/Rockys whole thing is moving from identity to identity, so he wants to stay and "make sure everyone gets to the beach alive" so he can go through with his sea cave plan of murdering Nick and stealing his identity.

I'm just thinking the writer had to have some kind of explanation for that scene. I think the dialog is just intentionally misleading, but it's not full on cheating.

Exactly it's just stupid... I hate movies like this they are just so unimaginative. Obviously we have to assume it's not them if they pretend to be innocent when alone and talk about leaving etc... Yet they turn out to be the killers I mean wtf... I could understand if it were the husband alone but not both it makes no sense it's just a stupid out to try and seem creative when in reality we were given a multiple choice question without being given the correct choice as the answers...

Literally just finished this movie a few hours ago. I remember when it came out but never got around to seeing it. I would consider it a thriller/suspense movie for sure which fits into the horror genre IMO.

Honestly, I really enjoyed this movie. Even though it felt a bit too on the nose at times it was still organized in a very enjoyable way. The characters were fun to watch and it didn't feel like just any other 'couple being hunted' or 'couple in danger' movie.

I figure thriller is somewhat related to horror. Fun movie, definitely better than you’d expect it to be.

Might be more of a "thriller"... whatever that distinction really is. But man, that one jump scare... you know the one. One of the few thats made me physically jump every time I've seen it.

I just made a video about The Perfect Getaway, such a fun movie! What I Watched This Week

I think she is saying Whoop-tee-tah

Like a “well would you look at that” phrase

Is that a well known phrase?
