Will Smith will soon be back on the big screen with his role in Bad Boys: Ride or Die, but that's not the only sequel on the way to star the Oscar-winning actor. He's also set to return for a new sequel to I Am Legend, the post-apocalyptic 2007 film starring Smith in the lead role.

In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight, Smith shared an update on the progress being made with I Am Legend 2. As of now, not much is known about the story other than that it will also feature Michael B. Jordan co-starring with Smith. While the story is still coming together, Smith feels that it's "looking good" and that he and Jordan have some "really solid ideas" for the sequel. While it remains unclear when production may begin, Smith appears to be pretty optimistic about the project.

I Am Legend 2 Will Retcon the Original Movie's Ending

While details about the sequel are still largely unknown, one thing that's been explained is how Smith will return. In the original movie, Smith's character was killed off in the end, though he survived in an alternate ending. It's been confirmed that the new movie will ignore the ending of the theatrical version of I Am Legend, as it will instead go by the alternate ending where Smith's Neville is still alive. It's also been teased that more elements from the original novel will be explored.

Will Smith Recalls Steven Spielberg Convincing Him to Accept Men in Black Role

Steven Spielberg flew Will Smith directly to his house to convince him to take on the lead role for Men in Black, according to the actor.

This will start a few decades later than the first," screenwriter Akiva Goldsman previously told Deadline about the concept of the sequel. "We trace back to the original [Richard] Matheson book, and the alternate ending as opposed to the released ending in the original film. What Matheson was talking about was that man's time on the planet as the dominant species had come to an end. That's a really interesting thing we're going to get to explore. There will be a little more fidelity to the original text."

Bad Boys: Ride or Die premieres in movie theaters on June 7, 2024.
