Women's Basketball Signs Transfer Davai Matthews

Matthews spent the previous two seasons at Long Beach State and will attend Providence beginning in the fall of 2024.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Friar women's basketball Head Coach Erin Batth announced today [May 17] that Davai Matthews (Detroit, Mich.) has signed an athletic aid agreement and will transfer to Providence College for the 2024-25 season. Matthews, a 6-foot, 3-inch forward, spent the previous two seasons at Long Beach State and has two years of eligibility remaining.

"We're excited to add Davai to our program," Batth said. "She has great touch around the rim and can run the floor and score in transition. Offensively, she is versatile in that she can face up and attack, but also stretch the floor with a 15-foot jumper. Davai has a positive energy and attitude, and she will impact the game on the boards with her ability to rebound the basketball."

During the 2023-24 campaign, Matthews played 31 games and appeared in the starting line-up 18 times. She averaged 4.5 points and 4.6 rebounds for the Beach and recorded four double-digit scoring games. Matthews posted a career-high 15 points against Cal Poly and registered her first career double-double against CSU Bakersfield with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Matthews attended Wayne Memorial High School in Detroit, Mich., where she earned 2022 Michigan Associated Press Division I All-State Honorable Mention accolades and Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan's BEST Girl's Basketball All-State Team honors for Division I. Additionally, she was a 2022 McDonald's All-America nominee.

With the addition of Matthews, the Friars' 2024-25 roster is comprised of 15 student-athletes. The squad has 11 returning players, including five members of the starting line-up. Matthews is one of four newcomers who will make their way to Friartown. She joins true freshmen Orlagh Gormley and Audrey Shields and graduate transfer Mackayla Scarlett.
