This has some great music, whether or not you were there in the 60's. It puts together a lot of the soul hits from various artists into one collection for a good price. This collection has some of the expected hits by the superstars, but it also has some lesser-known hits by some artists who had just one or two hits. It is good to hear some of the music you hadn't heard in awhile, and these songs need to be remembered.

Even with the good song selections, this appears to have been thrown together in a hurry, with songs put in questionable categories and assembled in haphazard order. With 151 songs, that averages out to about 15 songs to each year, which leaves out some good songs which should have been included.

If you want to supplement this collection, you can buy Sixties Soul Machine, which is available for a good price on Amazon, and will give you 45 more of the best songs after accounting for duplications. If you get this and the Time-Life set, you will probably have most of the soul hits that “crossed over” to pop.

If you are serious about soul music, an alternative would be the series called Sweet Soul Music (Scorching Classics). There is one CD for each year starting from 1961, and each one has about 30 songs. This seems to be more well thought-out with each CD coming with its own 60 page booklet, with color photos and commentary on each track. This has some songs that are missing from the other collections. (If you want the soul hits of 1960, there is a companion CD called Blowing The Fuse.)

The classic soul era did not end with 1969. It continued through the first half of the 1970's, in my opinion. The Sweet Soul Music (Scorching Classics) series continues through these years, with more essential and forgotten songs. They are all available on Amazon.

Another good collection for 70s soul is the series of CD's titled “Soul Hits Of The 70s: Didn't It Blow Your Mind!” You can choose which volumes you want from this series, but I would buy all the volumes from 1 to 13, which would give you about all of the best soul hits from 1970 up to 1974.

If you like 60's soul enough to collect more of it, you should also get Beg, Scream & Shout!: The Big Ol' Box of 60's Soul. It covers more of the same type of music, with many lost gems, and not too much duplication with the other two sets. This one is out of print, so try to find it for the lowest price you can, either on Amazon or elsewhere.

When you get your set of Time-Life CDs, you should check to make sure they are all there. When I got my set, there were two copies of one CD, while one of the others was missing, and I had to get it replaced. But don't let that stop you from buying it. I had no problems with the playability of my CDs.
