Elizabeth Keadle 1958-

Horsewoman Mary Elizabeth "Liz" Keadle is known for her involvement in dressage competitions, biochemistry and Democratic politics in the United States. As the owner of Clear Spring Farm in Rancho Santa Fe, California, Ms. Keadle breeds, trains and shows thoroughbreds trained for the demanding sport of dressage. The ten-acre farm is also host to many events in support of environmental causes and fundraisers for the Democratic Party.

CLEAR SPRING FARM INC. Clear Spring Farm is a California corporation founded in May 2006 {CA #2595320).[1] Keadle serves as its Chief Executive Officer (CEO). As majority stockholder, Keadle oversees a large portfolio of properties and funds, including the Elizabeth Keadle Fund, a part of the San Diego Foundation.

THE ELIZABETH KEADLE FUND In 2008 The Elizabeth Keadle Fund gave $250,000 to a San Diego-based environmental fund affiliated with University of California at San Diego. The Fund followed up with numerous donations to environmental causes, notably a large gift to the Ocean Discovery Institute, an education initiative for kids.[2]

ENVIRONMENTALISM In the 2000s, Keadle served as a member of the President's Council of the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy, now known as the Nature Collective. This non-profit organization is committed to connecting, "lands and hiking trails, provides experiences for people to fall in love with nature, and protects the beauty all around us. ... [and] envisions a world where everyone experiences, connects with, and protects nature."[3] Although she no longer serves in this role, Keadle continues to support this initiative and others dedicated to combatting climate change and bringing the joys of nature to all through the Elizabeth Keadle Fund. In September 2009, the activist hosted a fundraiser for the Nature Collective at her estate Clear Spring Farm.

DRESSAGE A passionate lover of horses, Keadle is a sponsor of the California Dressage Society's San Diego Chapter. In March 2008, Keadle's rider won the Amateur International dressage competition astride Prestiche, a horse sired by Balmoral in 1997, which is boarded and trained at Clear Spring Farm in Rancho Santa Fe. Dressage is considered by the International Federation of Equestrian Sports (FEI) to be "the highest expression of horse training." This competitive sport relies on a relationship of trust between horse and rider, as the pair work together to perform a series of predetermined movements from memory. To many it is an art form enjoyed purely for the sense of bonding with the animal as an extension of oneself.

DEMOCRATIC POLITICS Although she resides in a predominantly Republican district, Keadle has long been active in Democratic politics. In 2002, before the passage of the McCain Feingold Act, Keadle donated $262,000 to the Democratic Party. She was one of 36 Democrats selected to sit on the committee that chose the location of the 2004 Convention. She also served as one of 55 electors sent to represent California to the Electoral College in support of Barack Obama in 2008. Keadle has hosted a number of fundraisers for Democrats at Clear Springs Farm and personally donated $5000 to the Obama Victory Fund and $120,000 to the Democratic National Committee Building Fund. She remains active in Democratic politics.

PERSONAL Known to friends as "Liz," Keadle is a biochemist of independent means. The dark-haired beauty plays an active role in the pastimes and causes she supports. Keadle was once married to biotech entrepreneur Lyle Turner, one of the founders and former CEO of Invitrogen Corporation (now Life Technologies, a subsidiary of Thermo Fisher Scientific). They divorced in 2007. In addition to devoting some of her boundless energy to biochemistry, Keadle plays an active role in investing in companies and causes she believes in. She has been dating former vice president, Nobel Prize and Academy Award winning environmentalist Al Gore for many years.[4]
