What Does Yawm Mean?

DEFINITION

Yawm is the islamic word for “day.” Following the lunar calendar, the Muslim’s day starts and finishes at Maghrib (sunset) prayer, as opposed to the solar calendar day finishing at midnight.

You will commonly see the word yawm used to describe special days throughout the year or in the future. Here are some examples:

  • Yawm al-Arafah: the Day of Arafah
  • Yawm al-Eid: the Day of Eid
  • Yawm al-Qiyamah: the Day of Judgement
