Gentlemen,
Age of Empires Heaven is a great platform. Thank you very much for your effort. My favorite game is still alive !

To my questions:

I have two laptops with Windows 7 (32 bit) and have installed AoE to both of them.
(Ubisoft eXclusive Collector's Edition)
Age of Empires Version is 1.0c
The Rise of Rome version is 1.0a

Are 1.0c and 1.0a the latest official patches?

I use GameRanger for multiplayer gaming. But sometimes I travel to my Mountain Cabin and have no internet connection there. Can I connect two laptops with cable together and play Age of Empires with my friend? If yes please help me to set it up.

PS: I have a CAT-5 and a Crossover cable here.

You need a serial cable.
All you have to do is connect the PCs, and turn them on. No configuration or whatsoever is needed, because a serial cable is INDEPENDENT from a network card. No IPs here.

Now, go to the Age of Empires multiplayer menu. There you should see something like 'Serial Connection for DirectPlay'. Now, click OK, and create a game. Upon creating, you will be asked for information on the communications port (a hardware port, not an IP port! ), baud rate, stop bits, parity and flow. Make sure that the serial cable is connected to the COM1 port of your PC. If not, select a different COM port, the one you plugged the cable into. Now, join with the other PC. Upon clicking 'show games'. You will be asked the same questions. Check that the port is correct (the cable is plugged into the correct place), and click ok. Now you should see the game and you should be able to join.

Note, once again: Do not use TCP/IP connection, or whatsoever. Use Serial connection for DirectPlay. Serial/Parallel cables work even if you have NO network card. 9-pin serial plugs use ports that are (almost always) designated COM ports and the parallel ports use the LPT ports (the old-fashioned printer port).

This connection method is very primitive, but very effective for two player gaming, and it even works. Because it is so 'ancient', I believe you don't even have to disable most firewalls, they do not track it. Even though it is primitive, it works perfectly for Age of Empires, I know

PhatFish,
Thank you very much for your helpful answer. I love painless installations. I will try it tomorrow. Now going to search for a Serial-Cable....

You don't need/can't connect newer laptops with serial cable (they don't have serial ports)! I think you should be able to use your Ethernet cable, establish a working Network and then just connect by IP (select Internet TCP/IP in Multiplayer).

aoe_scout, thank you very much for your advice.
It`s true new laptops don`t have the 9 pin serial ports.
I am lucky cause have old fashioned laptops with serial ports.

But if I select Internet TCP/IP in Multiplayer and configure it, do I need to connect laptops with a Crossover Cable or with a standart Ethernet cable?

I haven't tried this type of connection, but I'm sure it's not the standard cable.

The easiest way would be if you have a wireless router and connect the 2 laptops to it (you don't need internet, they will be in WLAN). Whatever connection you use (except serial) you will have IP address of both computers, so you just need to connect one by the IP of the other (that's why you have to select "Internet TCP/IP" in Multiplayer).

My friend and I played with the ethernet variation during a Navy deployment a few months ago. Works well.
