Coquitlam woman dies after being hit by car in Mexico

A Coquitlam woman died Thursday after suffering injuries in a “devastating” incident while on vacation in Mexico.

According to a GoFundMe page started by Sabrina Koyanagi, husband and wife Troy and Kris Koverola were vacationing in Cancun, Mexico when Kris was hit by a car while crossing a road at a crosswalk on Sunday.

Kris was reportedly taken to an intensive care unit in a nearby hospital, where workers put her in an induced coma due to the severity of her condition.

According to a Facebook post written by Troy’s mother, Linda Koverola, Kris died in hospital on Thursday.

“There are no words for this,” said Linda.

Koyanagi says Kris was five months pregnant at the time of the incident.

The donation page was launched before Kris’ death with an initial goal of $15,000 to help support Troy as he stayed by Kris’ side in Mexico.

“Those of you who know Troy know his dedication and loyalty to his family and friends. He’s always there for others with a smile and positive attitude no matter what the situation is,” said Koyanagi.

“Any financial contributions will go towards covering for the unknown road ahead.”

As of Thursday evening, the campaign had raised close to $14,000.
