Fried Chicken Ice Cream

I love this fun fried chicken ice cream recipe! My girls and I took an afternoon to try this viral treat and it was so much fun. Choose cornflakes, rice krispies or even frosted flakes to coat the outside to make it look authentic and keep it crispy and crunchy. (affiliate links present)

Now the easiest way to get this done is to just buy a tub of vanilla or the flavor of your choice. If you want to really make a day of it with your kids you could make Ice Cream in Bags, freeze until firm and then you could go from there. There are a ton of variations you can make to this once you get the hang of the step by step.

Unlike fried ice cream you might order at your local favorite Mexican restaurant, you don’t cook this at all. BUT you’ll get that same hard shell on the outside with the crispiness that provides your mouth too. NO baking required at all. The only heat you use is to warm the white chocolate. And we share how to melt chocolate chips in microwave for you right here.

“Fried chicken ice cream” might sound like an unusual combination of flavors, but let’s go over a few variations you could make to the basic one we have here. Yours could involve a play on the classic sweet and savory contrast like salted caramel or bacon-flavored ice cream!

  1. Incorporate different crispy, crunchy elements mimicking the texture of fried skin. This could be achieved through the addition of crushed chips, cereal or even a candied coating.
  2. A drizzle of a tangy or savory sauce or a spiced maple syrup could create a whole new flavor experience.
  3. Other chicken shapes could be made this same way, without the candy stick “bone”.

It’s important to note that experimenting with unusual flavor combinations requires careful consideration of taste, texture, and overall balance. Before attempting something new, taste it before going thru the whole process so you don’t waste food. Start with the basics as we describe below and go from there.

This will make 4-6 pieces depending on how large you make your “meat”. 4 is just about right to make them as realistic as possible.

You can use a small cutting board, plate or platter to set these on. To make sure they don’t stick, use a piece of saran wrap over the top like you see here or wax / parchment paper is better to ensure they don’t. This will be cold, but fun! Work quickly as it will melt over time.

  • It is best to freeze twix sticks before making these, for about 1 hour.
  • It is best to wear gloves on your hands so that the vanilla ice cream does not melt so quickly.
  • Line a plate or cutting board with cling film.
  • Everything must be done very quickly.
  • Take a small handful of ice cream for on top, about 3-4 tablespoons, and mold the ice cream around the Twix bar or Kit Kat candy bars stick so it will resemble a chicken drumstick shape.
  • Put formed pieces on a plate or board lined with parchment or saran wrap and put it in the freezer for at least 3 hours to harden the cold ice cream.
  • Melt the white chocolate chips in microwave until smooth and let it cool slightly, but it is still liquid.
  • Transfer the crushed cornflakes to another bowl.
  • Remove the ice cream pieces
  • Quickly dip the ice cream into the chocolate until it is as coated as possible, then roll in the corn flakes. Put back on the plate and in the freezer for another 2-3 hours to harden. Then enjoy.

As far as the dipping you could use milk or dark chocolate to add a brown color to the outside too to be more realistic. I used what was on hand at the time. Not only will this help the crunchy cereal to stick on really well but it will also create a crunch when you bite into each one!! Almost like Magic Shell back in the day.
