Countdown to kickoff: Wesley Walker is the greatest No. 85 in Jets history

The former wide receiver is a member of the franchise's Ring of Honor

The Jets just wrapped up spring practices and training camp will begin in six weeks. In the meantime, Gang Green fans are anxiously counting down to the much anticipated regular season opener at home vs. the division rival Bills on Sept. 8.

With the countdown to kickoff at 85 days away, let's take a look back at the best No. 85 in Jets history: Wesley Walker.

Walker is regarded by NJ.com as the second-best wide receiver in Jets history. The Jets selected the 6-foot, 179-pound Walker with the 33rd pick in the second round of the 1977 NFL Draft. Walker went on to become a Jets lifer, spending his entire 13-year career in the green and white.

The speedy Walker took the NFL by storm in his first season, leading the league in yards per reception (21.1) and earning All-Rookie honors. For his encore, Walker led the league in receiving yards (1,169) and scored eight touchdowns, elevating him to First Team All-Pro in 1978.

Walker made Pro Bowl appearances in 1978 and 1982.

During the Jets' postseason run to the AFC Championship in 1982, Walker amassed 16 receptions, 314 yards and two touchdowns in road victories against the Bengals and Raiders

In 1983, Walker tallied a career-high 61 receptions along with seven touchdowns.

Walker's 1986 campaign was particularly memorable. Walker hauled in a career-best 12 touchdowns, scoring four times including the game-winner in OT during the Jets' epic 51-45 shootout victory vs. the Dolphins

Overall, Walker capped off his career with 438 receptions, 8,306 yards and 71 touchdowns, while averaging an amazing 19 yards per reception. Walker, a Ring of Honor member, is second in franchise history in receiving yards and touchdowns. Walker is also fifth in team history in receptions.

Simply put, Walker is not only the best No. 85 for the Jets but one of the franchise's all-time greats period. If you were a Jets fan during Walker's generation you can certainly attest to it.

But even if you weren't fortunate enough to witness Walker live, you can still check out his highlights and take pride in the fact that the Jets had one of the most electric wide receivers ever.
