Zimbabwe all-rounder Sean Williams retires from T20Is after Bangladesh series

Zimbabwe all-rounder Sean Williams has retired from T20Is after taking part in the 5-match series against Najmul Hossain Shanto’s Bangladesh. Williams decided to hang his boots after Zimbabwe secured a consolation victory by 8 wickets on Sunday in the last T20I at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.

Zimbabwe, however, lost the series 1-4. Williams played only 2 games in the series and failed to make a significant impact. The 37-year-old will continue representing the national team in ODIs and Tests. A Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) official, working with the Zimbabwean team, confirmed the development around Williams.

"He (Williams) decided to retire from T20I and informed about his decision to his team mates following the game," the official was quoted as saying to Cricbuzz.

Sean Williams’ impressive career

Williams made his T20I debut for Zimbabwe way back in 2006 against Bangladesh. From there on, he became a stalwart of the national team in the shorter format. In 81 T20Is, Williams scored 1691 runs at an average of 23.48 and a strike-rate of 126.38 with 11 half-centuries and a top score of 66 to his name.

Williams was also more than effective with the ball in hand, having taken 48 wickets at an economy rate of 6.93.

Williams has tasted the most success in ODIs for Zimbabwe. The left-handed batter is nearing the landmark of 5000 runs, having racked up 4986 runs from 156 matches at an average of 38.06 and a strike-rate of 86.69 with 8 hundreds and 35 fifties to show for his efforts. He also has 83 wickets to his name in ODIs.
