It’s been a while since I listened to the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack but it remains one of my favorite albums. Just thinking about the A-list talent that was on the album with incredible songs written & produced by THE Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds. (And to think that he wasn’t even the first choice on the album.)
I remember Babyface saying on an IG Live that there was a list compiled between him & Clive Davis of artists to be on the album and that Whitney had final say as to who made the cut. He said that there were a few names on there that were an IMMEDIATE hard no from Whitney.
(Even though Babyface was too much of a gentleman to name names, I’d give anything to know who those few artists were.)

Best movie soundtrack. EVER.
Honestly, every single song is a favorite. It’s a classic no skip album. But if I HAD to choose…Let It Flow, It Hurts Like Hell, Not Gon Cry, And I Gave My Love To You, Wey U and Love Will Be Waiting At Home.

Hurts Like Hell had me in tears when I was going through it whew. This whole soundtrack is amazing.
Maybe Paula Abdul since Whitney didn’t seem to like her or appreciate her vocals. Based on who was big in the R&B scene at the time you could maybe add Janet and Mariah, but I doubt Whitney would be such a snob that she would outrule their participation on the album, especially Janet since she was good friends with Whitney and their music styles were so different that I don’t think they competed against each other in any way.
THEORY that I made that could be ABSOLUTE NONSENSE: Mariah & Babyface wrote a song called Melt Away from Mariah's Daydream record. Mariah was meant to be on the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack but didn't make it??
Oh this and the soul food sound track had me in a chokehold. I have fond memories of listening to this soundtrack as a kid in the car riding to my aunts house in VA. Every track was slapping. This also introduced me to Chante Moore. The memories !
Yes, that Wey U track is so mellow. Chante’s voice is purely angelic…
So glad I found this sub. My kids are tired of me taking to them about stuff like this.
This album was the best soundtrack in an era of incredible soundtracks. It would 7 million copies and had 3 top ten hit singles. So many incredible singers and babyface clearly understands how to write from a woman’s perspective.
