The first thing you need to accept about “Rock’n’Roll” — an endearingly bizarre showbiz satire in which actor and filmmaker Guillaume Canet (“Tell No One”) plays a hyper-neurotic version of himself who suffers one of the worst mid-life crises since “8 1/2” — is that the movie never asks you to feel sorry for the guy who goes home to Marion Cotillard. On the contrary, Canet’s new comedy (his first outing behind the camera since his English-language debut flopped in 2013) is a bruised, self-deprecating spectacle that finds the French celebrity mocking himself for the fragility of his own ego.
Yes, the movie argues that stars might sense their expiration dates approaching more acutely than the rest of us, and…
On the first day of filming a project in which he participates, actor-director Guillaume Canet offers an interview for a magazine in which, unexpectedly, he confronts the fact that his personal and professional life are entering a stage of maturity. From that moment on, Canet enters a crisis and begins to question his boring image as a good boy of french cinema, as well as his comfortable and traditional relationship with the renowned actress Marion Cotillard and their son. The french director presents this irreverent satire, at times even bizarre, about a man in the midst of an existential crisis, obsessed with his image, who will go to extremes trying to prove that his career is not over, that he…
Not quite what you'd expect. A tour de force of self-parody and a clumsily incisive send-up of male fragility that not only does thoroughly work as something perfect for those I-don't-know-what-I-am-doing-with-my-life days, but also gifts the world with an opportunity for Marion Cotillard to flex her comedic chops, including an inspired Céline Dion impression, like there's no tomorrow. It's mostly like a French-made McKay/Ferrell movie that starts of taking itself somewhat seriously and increasingly leans more unambiguously towards silliness. Unfortunately a power outage interrupted my screening before I could see the final 5-10 minutes, yet I doubt there's anything that would undo what it had presented that far, specially considering that it features a handful of the year's funniest scenes.
This was not awkward at all.
Weird and funny behind curtains, more real than anyone could admit.
I was not expecting a French meta film about a man having a middle aged crisis to be funny, insane, but also super depressing?!? Like this was such a absurd film but it like works?!?
More importantly
MARION COTILLARD STEALS EVERY SCENE OF THIS FILM. First Marion Cotillard playing herself is so funny because she’s just basically making fun of herself and method actors. One of her archs is shes been cast in a Xavier Dolan film so half the movie she’s speaking utter nonsense that nobody else can understand because she’s trying to learn a French Canadian accent. Anyways more importantly there’s a scene where she’s talking to her husband when all of the sudden she’s like “I’ve got it,…
This made me laugh a lot. It’s kind of like of French McKay-Ferrell movie which I love. It’s a delight seeing Guillaume Canet & Marion Cotillard mocking themselves especially Cotillard who’s hilarious and gets to show off her comedic chops a little bit here. I had a blast the entire way.
The fragility of an actor transpires within when he is passed on through a phase where certain roles are suddenly not meant him. Guillaume Canet lives a great life who is both a popular director and actor in France while his partner is a global Academy Award Winning star and one of the best actress of this generation Marion Cotillard. Guillaume has had a certain image in public with being comfortable but while shotting his new film his co star who is playing his daughter says to him he is not rock n roll and never has been, strikes him a little bit to hard and what even goes to downfall is when she says that he is way down…
