I can't say the late Mike Gibbins (RIP) has been one of my favourite songwriters, despite being an alum of my 2nd favourite '60s band, Badfinger. I liked only a couple songs off his 1995 A PLACE IN TIME and about half of his 2000 effort MORE ANNOYING SONGS. And in fact, many of these songs share my usual criticisms: Too long, too simple, occasionally banal lyrics, and too derivitive.
But "simple, derivitive, and long" doesn't always mean bad. I was genuinely surprised at how good this effort was. Simple hooks, but they're there. And while I can't say there are many out-of-the-ballpark tracks here, there aren't many duds, either. Definitely a lost gem--it eluded my attention when it came out in 2005--but worth seeking out, not just as a piece of Badfinger music, but as a piece of simple, classic rock 'n' roll.
