Robert Duvall got his start on the stage, acting in various plays before taking a break to join the U.S. Army for a year in the early 1950s. He returned to stage acting and dabbled in TV before landing his debut film role as Boo Radley in 1962's "To Kill a Mockingbird."

Following "To Kill A Mockingbird," Robert Duvall appeared in numerous TV shows. In 1963, he acted on an episode of "The Twilight Zone," seen here, as well as episodes of "The Virginian" and "Stoney Burke" that same year.

Wedding bells! Robert Duvall married his first wife, Barbara Benjamin, in 1984. They were together until 1975. They're seen here at an Academy Awards party in 1973.

Robert Duvall starred in a slew of films in the late '60s from "Countdown" in 1967 and "Bullitt" in 1968 to "True Grit," seen here, opposite John Wayne in 1969. 

In 1970, Robert Duvall made waves as Major Frank Burns in the film "MASH." He followed that up with another big movie — 1971's "THX 1138" in which he played a fugitive attempting to escape an alien society. 

In 1972, Robert Duvall joined the cast of "The Godfather" as Tom Hagen. The performance earned him his first Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor and led to him appearing in the sequel "The Godfather Part II."

1979 saw Robert Duvall star in "Apocalypse Now," a critical darling that earned him a BAFTA Award and a Golden Globe. He also scored another Oscar nomination for his performance. The film is largely considered to be one of the best movies ever made.

On a roll! In 1979, another critically acclaimed film came out starring Robert Duvall — "The Great Santini." It delivered him his first best actor nomination at the Academy Awards. 

Robert Duvall married for the second time in 1982. He wed Gail Youngs, with whom he's seen attending a movie screening in 1983.

In 1984, Robert Duvall scored his first — and so far only — big Academy Award win. He played Mac in 1983's "Tender Mercies," a performance that earned him not only an Oscar but also a Golden Globe.

Robert Duvall moved to the small screen in 1989 for the popular miniseries "Lonesome Dove." His performance as former Texas Ranger Captain Augustus "Gus" McCrae earned him a Golden Globe Award and an Emmy nomination. 

Third time's the charm? Robert Duvall wed wife No. 3 in 1991, exchanging vows with dancer Sharon Brophy. They're seen here at New York City's Hard Rock Cafe the same year they tied the knot.

Robert Duvall picked up another Golden Globe in 1992 for his work in the TV movie "Stalin." The performance also scored him another Primetime Emmy nomination.

Robert Duvall wrote, directed and starred in 1997's "The Apostle," delivering a performance that netted him another best actor Oscar nomination. 

Back-to-back Oscar nominations! Robert Duvall followed up "The Apostle" with 1999's "A Civil Action." He starred opposite John Travolta in the film, which earned him another Academy Awards best supporting actor nod. 

Time for wedding No. 4! Robert Duvall wed Luciana Pedraza in 2005 after meeting her in Argentina in 1997. The couple, seen here at the 1998 National Board of Review Gala, share a birthday — Jan. 5 — but were born 41 years apart. 

In 2003, Robert Duvall was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He attended the ceremony with wife Luciana. 

President George W. Bush posed with Robert Duvall in the Oval Office after the actor received a National Medal of Arts — the highest honor given to artists and arts patrons by the U.S. government — in 2005. 

In 2006, Robert Duvall took home his very first Primetime Emmy for his work on the television movie "Broken Trail." The show also won outstanding TV film or miniseries that year. 

Robert Duvall joined Jeff Bridges and Colin Farrell in "Crazy Heart" in 2009. The film, which is based on the novel of the same name, received three Academy Award nominations. 

Robert Duvall received rave reviews for his 2014 film "The Judge" in which he starred alongside Robert Downey Jr. He scored another Oscar nod for his performance, making him the oldest actor — he was 84 at the time — ever nominated for an Academy Award for best supporting actor (though Christopher Plummer later took over the distinction).

Robert Duvall's most recent work was in the 2018 film "Widows." The actor — seen here at an "Apocalypse Now" 40th anniversary event in 2019 — has two projects in the works for 2021: "12 Mighty Orphans" and "Hustle."
