Arriving at Porto Airport (OPO)

Lisbon, Portugal, balances its traditional culture with modern life. Porto Airport is located approximately 6.8 miles (11 kilometers) from Porto city center. Its central location in Portugal makes it a prime airport to fly in and out of. The airport is surrounded by the municipalities of Vila do Conde (to the north) and Matosinhos (to the south and west). It's the second busiest in the country and is run by ANA Aeroportos de Portugal. OPO airport is the primary base for Ryanair, TAP Air Portugal, EasyJet, Iberia, Lufthansa, Luxair, and TAP Express. Connections include Frankfurt, Madrid, Barcelona, Liverpool, Pisa, Luxembourg, Brussels, and many more. The airport operates between 4:00 a.m. and 12:40 a.m. The ticket counters open from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. every day.

What's the best way to get from Porto Airport to the city center?

Porto Airport provides three methods of transportation to get travelers to the city center. Passengers can travel from the airport to the city center via public (bus or metro) or private (taxi or shuttle) transportation. Several bus lines run through the airport. The buses are run by two companies, STCP and Resende, which offer different routes and schedules. Most of the coaches run at 30-minute intervals, with the first bus starting at around 6:00 a.m. and the last bus ending at midnight. The metro is the most popular mode of public transportation available. It has an arrival frequency of 20 to 30 minutes every day, and operates even during weekends and holidays. Taxis may be the most comfortable method of transport in the city. Look for their distinctive beige or green roofing at the taxi stand at the airport. The green light on top of the taxi indicates that the cab is free for occupancy.

How far is the city center from Porto Airport?

Porto city center is approximately 6.8 miles (11 kilometers) from Porto Airport. The buses that drive from the airport into the city are the 601, 602, and 604. Travelers can also use the 119 and 3M during the day, and the 105N in the evening. The buses take approximately 40 minutes to reach the city center. The earliest bus leaves at 5:30 a.m., and the last bus leaves the airport at 12:30 a.m. The metro to town runs between 8:30 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on weekends, and 6:00 a.m. and 12:30 a.m. on weekdays. Metro trains leave the airport every 20 to 30 minutes and take approximately 25 minutes to reach the city. Taxis are available throughout the day, and their fare is metered. However, the rates are higher between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. on weekdays, as well as on public holidays and weekends. A taxi ride into the city takes about 20 minutes, making cabs the fastest and most comfortable mode of transportation.

Local tips: what to know before flying to Porto Airport

The city of Porto is famous for its beautiful scenery on the Douro river estuary and fantastic port wines. Travelers planning to use the bus often during their stay should consider purchasing a multiple-trip card. It's useful to have coins and notes handy for metro ticket machines, which also give change. Metro stations also have money exchange services. Travelers taking a taxi should ensure the meter starts when the journey begins.
