Dunhill Records

The Dunhill label was formed in 1965 by Lou Adler. From 1965 till about 1975, there were approximately 200 albums were released. The first one was by The Rincon Surfside Band titled “Surfside Songbook” as Dunhill D 50001/DS 50001; and the last one was by Murphys Law titled “Urban Renewal” as Dunhill DSD 50194. Dunhill Label Variations

There were five basic designs of the label. Each design has its’ own differences, mostly in the print around the bottom perimeter of the label. At the present time I do not know whether those differences were a result of being pressed at different times or different plants. Any help in determining that would be appreciated.

1. Overall black label with "Dunhill" in white letters inside a yellow frame at the top. The print circularly around the perimeter of the label bottom is white and varies as follows:

a. No bottom perimeter print.

b. "DIST. BY A.B.C. - PARAMOUNT RECORDS, INC. MADE IN U.S.A.".

c. "A SUBSIDIARY OF A.B.C. - PARAMOUNT RECORDS, INC MADE IN U.S.A.".

d. "A SUBSIDIARY OF ABC RECORDS, INC. • N.Y., N.Y. • Made in U.S.A.".

e. "A SUBSIDIARY OF ABC RECORDS, INC., NEW YORK, N.Y. 10019 • MADE IN U.S.A.".

NOTE: The Capitol Record Club used this style of label on ALL of the Dunhill records that it released through its club. (see the example to the right)

2. Overall black label with the 'Dunhill' and 'ABC Records' logos in ONE colored split box at the top. The border of the box is approximately 1/8 inch thick and there is one colored line between the two logos. Two variations of the overall color have been found. One is a very 'glossy' black that reflects the light and the other is a 'flat' black that does not reflect light. Other significant variations are as follows:

a. There is NO registration symbol (�) just to the right of the 'ABC Records' logo. The print around the perimeter of the label bottom is white and reads:

'Dunhill Records, Inc. is a subsidiary and trademark licensee of ABC Records, Inc. New York, N.Y. 10019 • Made in USA".

b. There is NO registration symbol (�) just to the right of the 'ABC Records' logo. There is no print around the perimeter of the label bottom. At the bottom of the label in silver print on one line is:

" P 1973, ABC Records, Inc."

c. There IS a registration symbol (�) just to the right of the 'ABC Records' logo. There is no print around the perimeter of the label bottom. At the bottom of the label in silver print on two separate lines is:

" P 1973,'
"ABC Records, Inc."

d. There IS a registration symbol (�) just to the right of the 'ABC Records' logo. There is no print around the perimeter of the label bottom. At the bottom of the label in silver print on two separate lines is:

" P 1973, ABC"
"Records, Inc."

e. There IS a registration symbol (�) just to the right of the 'ABC Records' logo. There is no print around the perimeter of the label bottom. At the bottom of the label in silver print on two separate lines is:

" P 1974, ABC"
"Records, Inc."

f. There IS a registration symbol (�) just to the right of the 'ABC Records' logo. The print around the perimeter of the label bottom is silver and reads:

"© Dunhill Records, Inc. MCMLXXI "

g. There IS registration symbol (�) just to the right of the 'ABC Records' logo. The print around the perimeter of the label bottom is silver and reads:

" P 1972, ABC Records, Inc."

g. There IS registration symbol (�) just to the right of the 'ABC Records' logo. The print around the perimeter of the label bottom is silver and reads:

" P 1973, ABC Records, Inc."

3. Overall black label with the 'Dunhill' and 'ABC Records' logos in TWO separate colored boxes at the top. The border of each box is approximately 1/8 inch thick. There is a registration symbol (�) just to the right of the 'ABC Records' logo. Variations are as follows:

a. The print around the perimeter of the label bottom is white and reads:

'Dunhill Records, Inc. is a subsidiary and trademark licensee of ABC Records, Inc. New York, N.Y. 10019 • Made in USA".

b. The print around the perimeter of the label bottom is white and reads (same as 3a):

'Dunhill Records, Inc. is a subsidiary and trademark licensee of ABC Records, Inc. New York, N.Y. 10019 • Made in USA".

This variation also includes the publication information from 2c (silver print " P 1973, ABC" on one line and "Records, Inc." just under it).

c. The print around the perimeter of the label bottom is white and reads:

"� Dunhill Records, Inc. MCMLXXI"

d. The print around the perimeter of the label bottom is silver and reads:

" P 1972, ABC RECORDS, INC."

e. The print around the perimeter of the label bottom is white and reads (same as 2d):

" P 1972, ABC RECORDS, INC."

f. The print around the perimeter of the label bottom is white and reads (same as 2d):

" P 1972, ABC RECORDS, INC."

This variation also includes the publication information from 2c (silver print " P 1973, ABC" on one line and "Records, Inc." just under it) like 2b.

g. The print at the bottom of the label is on one line. It is silver and reads (like 2d except lower case):

" P 1972, ABC Records, Inc."

h. The print around the perimeter of the label bottom is white and reads (same as 2d):

" P 1972, ABC RECORDS, INC."

This variation includes " P 1972, ABC Records, Inc." (same as 2g: note lower case) in silver print just above the perimeter print.

i. The print around the perimeter of the label bottom is white and reads:

"� Dunhill Records, Inc. MCMLXXI'

This variation includes " P 1972, ABC Records, Inc." (same as 2g: note lower case) in silver print just above the perimeter print.

j. The print around the perimeter of the label bottom is white and reads:

" P 1972/1973, ABC RECORDS, INC."

4. Overall black label with eight toy blocks in a white rectangle at the top. Variations are as follows:

a. The print at the bottom of the label is on one line. It is silver and reads (like 2g except 1973):

" P 1973, ABC Records, Inc."

b. There is no print at the bottom of the label. Under the record number on the right in silver on two separate lines is:

" P 1973, ABC"
"Records, Inc."

5. Purple to Yellow ABC ‘target’ label with ‘ABC Dunhill’ in black print at the top. Variations are as follows:

a. The print around the perimeter of the label print around the perimeter of the label bottom is black and reads:

"Mfg. & Dist. by MCA Distributing Corp., 100 Universal City Plaza, Universal City, CA 91608"

b. The print at the bottom of the label is on one line. It is black and reads (like 2g except 1974):

" P 1974, ABC Records, Inc."

c. The print at the bottom of the label is on two lines. It is black and reads:

" P 1974, ABC"
"Records, Inc."

d. There is no print at the bottom of the label.
