- NelsonMadison, WI83 contributionsBarn Bluff is an amazing hiking experience in Red Wing. There are several hikes from easy to difficult, so you pick the one that suits your needs. The parking lot was busy the day I was there, however there is parking along the road. No fees of any kind so very budget friendly. There is a west bluff and east bluff trail to visit. I liked the west one best however both are great! I did use a walking stick on my hike. You might want to do the same if you are starting to get in the "senior" category. Wear good hiking boots and you'll probably be fine. Just don't go right after a rain. Bring a camera and binoculars for some helpful accessories. I've also heard that bug spray is sometimes needed. The small history exhibit upstairs is interesting and educational. - buttereyesRed Wing, MN105 contributionsCrowning the towering Sorin’s Bluff in Red Wing, Memorial park overlooks the city and provides breathtaking panoramic views of the Mississippi River and the surrounding bluff country. Treat yourself to a blufftop sunrise or sunset!!
Memorial Park is must-see attraction for tourists in Red Wing and provides 268 acres of outdoor recreation. The park can be reached either by stairs or a quick drive up a narrow, serpentine road. Look for the WW2 M8 75 mm pack Howitzer at the entrance!
UPPER QUARRY-Take a right just before you reach the top of the bluff to access the UQ. Here you will find stone picnic tables, a picnic shelter, and hiking trails.
TOP OF THE BLUFF—You can park directly adjacent to the main overlook, so it’s not a taxing experience for those with limited mobility, seniors, or small kids in their party. The looping road encircles a disc golf course, picnic tables, and an old water tower that looks like a castle. There is a cave below the main overlook, but exercise caution in the descent.
LOWER QUARRY - At the end of the loop take a right to the Lower Quarry. Explore the endless hiking, biking, snowshoe and ski trails, along with old limestone quarries, cliffs and ravines.
Whether you’re looking for a quick view of the city or a hike around the bluff, Memorial will cover all your parks and rec needs. - buttereyesRed Wing, MN105 contributions…but you’ll find the best performances at the TB Sheldon. Set your phones to silent, grab some popcorn, and peek with me behind the red velvet curtains of this historic theater.
Affectionately known by locals as “The Jewel Box” of Red Wing, the Sheldon’s impressively ornate interior would upstage that of many other theaters. The lobby makes a dramatic entrance, and the auditorium steals the show with gorgeous murals, and gold and ivory plaster sculptures adorning the walls.
The Sheldon’s history is as dramatic as its decor, the building having survived two fires and an explosion that blew off the roof. Opening its doors in 1904, it hosted Vaudeville shows travelling through from Chicago to Minneapolis in its early years, and later converted to a movie house. Now it showcases live performances and lectures, as well as playing classic movies like Gone with the Wind.
I fondly remember performing here in my teens, electricity in the air as we waited for our cue, hoping not to break a leg en pointe. Most recently I watched the amazing musical Glensheen here, and it brought down the house! A Sheldon experience is always magical for the audience and the performers alike.
This theater is a destination unto itself, and is certainly a tough act to follow. The history behind the pottery is very interesting and for those that are a bit older, it's fun seeing items that are reminiscent of our childhood. My wife and I shared a glass of a sweet wine that was good. The pizza? I would drive down from my house (about an hour away) just to have pizza. The pizza was good the next day even if it was cold. - ReadRibbet929 contributionsWe sought out Anderson Center at Tower View to see the horse sculpture made out of metal parts which is listed on RoadsideAmerica. The Anderson center has its history in the Anderson family who were responsible for discover Puffed Wheat and Puffed Rice. You can enter the area without an admission fee and take in the grounds, tower and outdoor sculptures. There is an art center on the grounds that may require a fee ut we didn't go in.
