THE multi-billion-dollar Botox industry owes its existence to a spoiled black pudding. In the 1820s, German scientist Dr Justinus Kerner discovered the bacterial toxin while investigating victims of botulism poisoning after they had eaten pork meat infected with Clostridium botulinum. His research on the toxin’s ability to attack nerves, causing muscle weakness and paralysis, paved the way for its current therapeutic use in medicine and subsequent application in the cosmetic field.
