Will Butler earns two Tony Nominations for 'Stereophonic'

Posted 4/30/24

Congratulations to Stereophonic, the David Adjmi play featuring original music by Will Butler, nominated today for 13 Tony Awards, making it the most nominated play in the history of the ceremony. Butler was nominated for two awards, Best Original Score and, with Justin Craig, Best Orchestrations. The nominations are Butler’s first at the Tonys, the continuation of a heralded career as a musician that includes a 2014 Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score for the Spike Jonze film Her, and the Album of the Year Grammy for The Suburbs with his former band Arcade Fire! The 77th Tony Awards ceremony takes place June 16, 2024.

Stereophonic, the subject of rave reviews since its October 2023 Off-Broadway premiere, is the story of a band on the cusp of superstardom in the mid-1970s, striving for perfection in the recording studio as they make their breakthrough album. Read about how the music of Stereophonic came together — including the actors opening for Will Butler + Sister Squares album release show — in the New York Times.
