These four songs are mostly how I remember Bobby Bare during his early days in the 60's and this 1994 Razor & Tie CD is one of only a few CD's that has his version of "Green Green Grass Of Home" on it.
I bought his "16 Biggest Hits" CD several years ago knowing that song wasn't on that CD and I should have had patience and found this CD first! Even though it wasn't a huge hit and didn't chart: it's still as touching as the three Top 10 Country Classics of his I also listed above ("500 Miles Away From Home" was also a Top 10 Pop Hit).
These twenty one tunes are from the years 1958-1969 and "Green Green Grass Of Home" originated on Bobby's 1966 Studio Album called "The Streets Of Baltimore" and that #5 Self Titled Country Hit can also be found on this CD along with four other Top 10 Hits. That's a total of eight Top 10's on this CD plus Two Top 20's, one Top 30, one Top 40 and one Top 50 and all twenty one songs are winners.
This CD has good sound quality and it comes in the standard plastic jewel case that has a foldout leaflet in it which has a mini-biography of Bobby and it also has song info. On the day I typed this Review: this Disc was Out Of Print but it is nice!
I am not putting down The "16 Biggest Hits" Series but as with Bobby Bare and a few other Country Music Legends: I've recently replaced my "16 Biggest Hits" CD's for more thorough CD Compilations because I was missing a few favorite tunes I love that were not on that popular Series but I do still have other Country artists represented by "16 Biggest Hits" that are perfect for me.
Around 1995 "Time Life Music" came out with their excellant: although underrated "The Country Music Hall Of Fame Presents: Legendary Country Singers" Series CD's and I am very surprised Bobby Bare wasn't included in that Series! He definately deserved it.....but this CD is excellant too.
My four favorite songs of Bobby's that I listed in the first paragraph have been covered many times by other artists and I still believe Bobby's versions are the best but I do have to admit.....The quality of Neil Young's and "The Searchers" versions of "Four Strong Winds" are phenomenal as well! I have also typed an earlier Amazon Review on The Searchers.
