Seeking the best views of Kanchenjunga can be an enchanting quest for any traveler. Known as the third highest peak in the world, Kanchenjunga's majestic presence is a sight to behold, and finding the perfect spot to witness its glory is a journey worth taking.

Let's explore the best places to see Kanchenjunga in its full glory (preferably without difficult trekking). I will also share with you the best hotels with Kanchenjunga views, the best time to plan your trips and other tips to see Kanchenjunga in its full glory.

I have heard from people who woke up at 4 am and drove to the Tiger Hill parking area and wrestled the zealous crowd to catch the glimpse of the golden peak at sunrise and returning without a sight of it. It seemed as difficult as sighting a tiger in the wild. But unlike my safari experiences, my trips to north Bengal and Sikkim have always been quite lucky. I have seen the peak on all my trips, often from the comfort of my hotel.

This article is a culmination of my experiences, designed to guide you to the best viewpoints. I have focused more on sharing the tips to catch the best views of Kanchenjunga without much of an effort, while travelling with family and kids. But I have also included some spots that require moderate level of trekking to reach the viewpoint.

1. Tiger Hill, Darjeeling

Let's start with the average Bengali's favorite hill station, the Queen of Hills, Darjeeling. Situated about 13 km from the main town of Darjeeling, this Tiger Hill is most famous Kanchenjunga viewpoint. It is best visited early for the sunrise. On a clear day you can also see the Mount Everest peak.

You'll need to wake up around 4 am and make your way to the viewpoint. Although navigating through the parked cars in the early morning can be a bit of a hassle, the stunning view that awaits is well worth it. Local cab drivers often provide a helpful wake-up call if you've hired them for sightseeing.

2. Tinchuley , Darjeeling District

Tinchule, located near Kalimpong in West Bengal, is a lesser-known yet captivating viewpoint for Kanchenjunga. Approximately 60 kilometers from Darjeeling, Tinchule offers a tranquil escape from the more touristy areas. The name ‘Tinchule' is derived from the local term meaning ‘three chullas' (or three ovens), signifying the three hilltops that make up this area.

3. Lamahatta Eco Park, Darjeeling District

Lamahatta, a quaint and serene village, is located about 23 kilometers from Darjeeling in the state of West Bengal. The name ‘Lamahatta' is derived from the word ‘Lama', meaning Buddhist monk, and ‘Hatta', meaning hut – a reference to the small huts monks used to reside in. This picturesque hamlet is set amidst lush green forests and terraced farms, offering a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. Lamahatta is particularly known for its beautifully landscaped garden, which is a major attraction for visitors.

From Lamahatta, one can enjoy splendid views of the Kanchenjunga range. 4. Batasia Loop, Darjeeling

Commissioned in the year 1919, Batasia loop is a spiral railway that was created to lower the gradient of ascent of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railways. At this historic location lies a beautiful, landscaped park and the War Memorial honoring the Gorkha soldiers of the Indian Army.

From here you can get a 360-degree view of the Darjeeling town with the snow-capped Kanchenjunga on the horizon. It's one of the most photogenic spots in Darjeeling.

Places like the Batasia Loop, Peace Pagoda and Ghoom Monastery can be seen on your way back to Darjeeling from Tiger Hill. However, if you don't go there in the early morning, you can visit Batasia loop any time in the day. It is located within the town, only 5km away from Mall Road.

If you've booked a joyride on the Himalayan Railways, you won't need to pay an entrance fee, and the train conveniently stops here for about 15 minutes, giving you ample time to enjoy the view.

5. Darjeeling Himalayan Railways

The DHR station itself is a great viewpoint for Kanchenjunga on a sunny day.

6. Mall Road, Darjeeling

Mall Road is a town center of Darjeeling that has an uncanny resemblance with a market square in Europe. Albeit the insane crowd in the evening that truly makes you feel bad about the over-tourism that I too am contributing to.

Standing at an elevation of 2134 meters it provides a spectacular view of Kanchenjunga from the main square, also known as Chowrasta. Vehicles of all sorts are restricted in the Mall road making is a great place to take a stroll in the early morning. So, you can wake up early for a walk in the Mall Road, watching the local life unfold as you ascend to the top.

7. Skywalk, Pelling

The Skywalk in Pelling is a recent and thrilling addition for Kanchenjunga viewing. This glass-bottomed structure, complemented by the giant Chenrezig Statue, offers a stunning perspective of the mountain. The Skywalk has quickly become a must-visit for its unique combination of religious significance and modern architecture, all set against the backdrop of the majestic Himalayas.

The best views of Kanchenjunga that I ever got was from my hotel in Pelling, every single day I stayed there. I woke up early in the morning to see the peak sparkle like gold as the first ray of sun touched it. Then slowly it became brighter and whiter as the breakfast time approached.

I came back from my sightseeing and sat in the balcony watching the peak fade away.

For a wider, unobstructed view of Kanchenjunga, the Helicopter Pad in Upper Pelling is an excellent vantage point. This spot is easily accessible and offers a panoramic view of the mountain range, making it a great alternative to more popular viewpoints.

10. Kalimpong Science City

12. Delo Hills, Kalimpong

Delo Hills in Kalimpong is known for its sweeping views of Kanchenjunga. The hills, easily accessible from the town center, offer one of the best panoramic views in the region, making it a popular destination for visitors.

The top attraction here is the British-era landscaped park called the Delo Park. The erstwhile governor's bungalow is located inside the park and has been converted into a hotel now. It is owned by the Kalimpong district administration. The stunning viewpoint also has a “I Love Kalimpong” sign adding another photo opportunity.

You can also book paragliding adventure from here on a clear day. Kalimpong is the top paragliding destination in the eastern side of India.

13. Charkhole, Kalimpong District

Charkhole, emerging as a hidden gem in the Kalimpong district of West Bengal, is located approximately 80 kilometers from Darjeeling. This offbeat destination is nestled amidst dense forests of Pine and Oak and offers a serene and unspoiled natural setting, making it an ideal spot for travelers looking for tranquility away from the more popular tourist spots.

Charkhole provides some of the most stunning and uninterrupted views of the Kanchenjunga range. The panoramic vistas from this vantage point are particularly breathtaking, with the mighty peaks of Kanchenjunga dominating the horizon.

Though it is a remote location there are many lovely homestays here with hotel-like amenities. But carry your medicines and essentials when planning a stay in Charkhole.

14. Namchi, Sikkim

Another fantastic destination with amazing weather where you can enjoy a lovely family vacation with Kanchenjunga views is Namchi, in West Sikkim. Namchi, that literally translates to “top of the sky” is blessed with pristine natural beauty and is speckled with Buddhist monasteries.

Another top attraction in Namchi is the Char Dham temple dedicated to Hindu deity Shiva. Char Dham and Samdruptse Monastery are the top Kanchenjunga viewpoints in Namchi.

15. Buddha Park, Ravangla

Also known as Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist Temple, the Japanese Temple was built in 1972 and is located 10 minutes away from the Darjeeling town center, on the hill of Jalapahar. The Peace Pagoda is a white monument in the same complete that stands as a symbol of peace and harmony. It provides splendid views of Kanchenjunga. It's an ideal spot for those seeking a tranquil environment.

17. Tashi Viewpoint, Gangtok

Tashi Viewpoint in Gangtok is a popular spot for panoramic views of Kanchenjunga, especially at sunrise or sunset. Easily accessible, it's a great place to witness the grandeur of the Himalayas in a comfortable setting.

Viewpoints Accessible Through Trek

Several treks in India lead to viewpoints where the grandeur of this colossal peak can be admired. Here are a few notable treks known for their breathtaking Kanchenjunga views, along with their length and difficulty levels.

Sandakphu

At 3636 meters, Sandakphu is the highest peak of the Singalila Ridge on the Indo-Nepal border and is the highest point in West Bengal. It is a trekkers' paradise although now you have a motorable road to Singalila National Park.

While you can reach here by car and just a little bit of ascent by walk, the trekking trails are worthwhile. The most famous trail is the Sandakphy-Phalut Trek.

The Sandakphu-Phalut Trek, starting from Manebhanjan near Darjeeling, is an enthralling journey through the Eastern Himalayas. Spanning approximately 6-8 days, this trek offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural richness.

Besides the panoramic view of the world's tallest peaks, including the majestic Kanchenjunga, which forms the stunning ‘Sleeping Buddha' silhouette. The highest point of the trek, Sandakphu, offers breathtaking vistas of Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu. As you proceed towards Phalut, the second highest point, you are greeted with an even closer view of these towering peaks. The sunset from Phalut is particularly mesmerizing, casting a golden hue over the snow-clad mountains.

December and February

Surprisingly it's the winter months that offer clear skies for the best views of Kanchenjunga, though it can be quite cold. The months of December and February are the best months to see Kanchenjunga from Darjeeling, Kalimpong or Sikkim region.

Usually, January gets extremely cold from the Makar Sankranti period, so you may want to avoid that time.

April to May

Spring is another great time, with moderate weather and a good chance of clear views, plus the added beauty of blooming flowers. April to May is a great season to visit for a pleasant escape from the hot and humid weather of the plains.

However, occasionally in spring you may have overcast skies that hides the distant views.

  2. Hi Sinjana! Thanks for this post. Question: what is the best season to visit Kanchenjunga for trekking and optimal weather conditions? Are there any specific times of the year when trekking in Kanchenjunga is not advisable due to weather or other conditions?

    1. Thanks Trisha. The best time for the trekking trails mentioned here is in April. The weather is warmer and the rains are at bay too. In May the summer kicks in but there are rains, and by July it’s peak monsoon. So April to early May is ideal for trekking. It’s also the season of rhododendrons.
