About as small towny as you can get in a semi urban part of Middlesex County/New Jersey. A lot of transient renters has the effect that those who own all know each other. Community is important to the natives here. It is safe but violent crime and assault does happen. Schools are better than their ratings and Main Street shopping is valuable and convenient. Pubs are few but restaurants are above average…supplemented by even better restaurants in surrounding towns. Town amenities are average with the parks being the best in that category. Train station in New Brunswick is 2 miles away. A daily commute to Midtown NYC is about 1.5 hours each way, door to door. Overall if you don’t want full blown suburban living and want an urban experience where you can still mow your lawn…you cannot do better than this in NJ.
Highland Park is a small town with a small community. Everyone knows each other, and it's a friendly town overall. This town is safe overall because many people walk since it is small; even at night, it's not very dangerous. The public schools here are diverse, and the school community has excellent staff and teachers. I love how all the stores are close together, which makes walking convenient. I would like to see new stores coming into the town, recently a supermarket shut down causing many problems. Many elders have trouble going out of town to get groceries, so it will be great to have another supermarket opening in the city.
Growing up in Highland Park, I have always felt a strong sense of support within my community, which has allowed me to push myself to accomplish goals that I would have never dreamed of before. I appreciate how my town continuously finds ways to appeal to everyone's needs and encourages our voices to be heard. Not only do the local businesses and schools go out of their way to make people feel safe, but our teen center also provides us with their guidance when it comes to personal issues and questions. My town is a place where I know I feel safe and accepted. Though this may be the case for me, I personally know others who have dealt with serious bullying in my community. I would like to see my town change for the better and address bullying properly. They have held pep rallies in schools to address this issue but I believe much more needs to be done. I would like for our town to take preventative measures about this issue in hopes that fewer kids will fall victim to bullying.
