How can I use this resource with my class?

Book reviews are a brilliant way to help children hone their critical thinking and reading comprehension skills in a more freeform way, but it's always handy to have a little structure to help them organise their thoughts, and our lovely book review template is just what you need!

It's easy-to-print and has a whole variety of questions to encourage your pupils to evaluate their recent reading and to inspire them to think creatively, including a section for an illustration to really encourage them to express their imaginations on paper. The mixture of different question types ensures that no matter how your pupils learn best, there's a way for them to fully express their thoughts on a book in their reviews

This book review template is a flexible tool that works equally well as an in-class or homework assignment, or even as a tool to support an external reading scheme for parents! However you choose to use it, it's sure to be a time-saving helping hand for you and your pupils alike.

Why are book reports important for children?

Educators across the board agree that book reports help students learn how to structure and express their thoughts, as well as helping them to become comfortable with exploring their deeper thoughts on and understanding of a text, work out what they enjoy reading (a big step that can help to spur a life-long love of reading), and to improve their core literacy skills such as spelling, grammar, and vocabulary. It also helps teachers to assess children’s comprehension of their reading books, and ensure that books are read properly, rather than being skimmed!

What makes a good book report?

There's not one single way to write a good book report, but the best ones often feature these key traits:

    • a short summary of the plot
    • a discussion of what you particularly liked about the book
    • an explanation of anything you didn't like
    • a conclusion - possibly with a rating!

If you're looking for a helpful template to help structure a book report, our wonderful book review template is perfect! It's easy to print and fill in, with plenty of space to note down thoughts and opinions.
