Biography

  • Judith Marjorie Collins (born May 1, 1939), otherwise known as Judy Collins, is a folk, country and rock ‘n’ roll singer-songwriter from Washington US, reputable for her soothing vocals, along with her ability to play the guitar in seamless cohesion.

Inspired by artists such as Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, and more generally the folk resurgence of the early 1960s, Judy Collins hit stardom in 1967 after her cover of Joni Mitchell’s ‘Both Sides, Now’, released on her album ‘Wildflowers’, gained international recognition. Not only did the single peak at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100, but Collins also won her first Grammy Award for Best Folk Performance as a result. Judy then released singles such as ‘Someday Soon’ and ‘Turn! Turn! Turn!’ before the 1970 Christian hymn ‘Amazing Grace’ returned Collins back to the top 20 of the US Billboard Hot 100 - it peaked at no. 15 - and also charted at no. 10 on the Australian Singles Chart. During her career, the talented folk singer has released over 25 studio albums, along with numerous live and compilation albums, whilst also utilizing her vocal talents on different stages; in 1970, Collins featured on The Muppet Show, and sang ‘Leather-Winged Bat’, ‘Do Re Mi’, ‘I Know an Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly’ and ‘Send in the Clowns', whilst also starring on Sesame Street on numerous occasions.

Collins performed at prestigious settings such as the Wolftrap Farm amphitheater (Vienna USA) and the Capitol building (Washington USA), and also performed at President Bill Clinton’s first inauguration in 1993. She is commended for her ethical motives, as a representative for UNICEF, and was also awarded a Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts Degree from Pratt Institute (2009). A multi-talented individual, Judy Collins is a highly respected member amongst the folk-music following and beyond.

Live reviews

  • Judy Collins

I found Judy Collins Performance a very relaxed and entertaining evening relating her 60 years in the music business with a mixture of songs, short and long, mostly of her own early work alongside some Stephen Sondheim musical pieces accompanied on grand piano by her musical arranger Russell Walden!

Her vocal range and breath control is still as good today as it ever has been, much like Dolly Parton and Shirley Bassey whose voices also appear even stronger now than ever

For Judy age is no barrier to singing well within her range!

I would go back to see her anytime she comes back to these shores!

She may not be for everyone, but she can still hold a note which many younger than her are already unable to do!

So if you like to hear songs well sung go see Judy Collins!

  • I'm a long-time fan of Judy Collins. I last saw her on tour with Stephen Stills to promote Everybody Knows, the Stills-Collins album. With so many artists from the 60s & 70s doing retirement tours, I decided to take advantage of her local appearance. I am happy to report that she is still in excellent voice. As artist known for her vocal range, and the beauty of her tone, she is still able to deliver a breathtaking, emotional array of classic favorite songs, and newly written ones as well.

Her onstage patter, and storytelling, though practiced, is endearing and entertaining. If you are a fan, do yourself a favor and see Judy Collins while she is still touring to a city near you.

  • My sister and I (Paula and Dorothy) bought two tickets. When we arrived at check in they told us we would be sharing a table with two others. At our table were two college roommates, fulfilling a bucket list. Their names were Paula and Dorothy. That was the beginning of the most magical evening. I have been to many shows over the past 40 years...this one was one of the best. I love the stories mixed in with her songs. I love that she has been a constant love in my life. For two hours I was lost in the moment. I cannot believe she will be touring with Stephen Stills. I am trying to figure out how to get to Denver!! Thank you so much for the beauty of your songs.

  • Just got back from seeing Steven Stills and Judy Collins at the Visalia Fox Theater. 10 minutes to there and 10 minutes back.. A pretty good concert they played one hour forty five minutes no cell phone use stressed early.. They played their hits and some new stuff from them. Stevens voice is not the same but Judy picked up and filled in some of his singing. He still plays great.. Judy sounded really good her voice was good and hit a lot of highs.. The Fox Theater Visalia was an awesome place 1900 seats and a real good feel and sound. We sat in the balcony and it was like watching them across the street from my house.

  • This concert was amazing, her voice cannot be compared to anyone else. Range and timbre is unequaled in my opinion. And she is about to turn 80! We drove 2 1/2 hrs each way, for a 90 minute concert, so worth it. That is my only disappointment, wish it was longer, since I could listen to her singing for however long she wanted to sing (LOL). But I would say she has earned the right to perform in whatever way she is able. Phenomenal experience, & of course hearing her sing Christmas carols in this season is very uplifting and inspiring.

  • Judy Collins' voice is just as beautiful and strong as it was 40 years ago. She seemed very comfortable singing her old standards with a nice mix of songs a bit less familiar, where some artists feel they need to focus on newer material. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate with pouring down rain in this outdoor venue through her concert, but Judy was very gracious and appreciative of those who endured the elements. Hope she returns to the Denver area soon at an indoor venue!

  • Judy was still as beautiful and her voice was like a bird, still.

I use to travel with the Command Military Touring Shows when I was in the Army in the early 70's, and sang many of her songs.

I got teary eyed with "Some Day Soon", and "Send In The Clowns".

I brought an old book with me with a CD of when she sang "Over The Rainbow".

I had hoped that she was out signing CD's, especially if she wants people to buy them.

That was the only down side to this performance.

    Very nice.

  • Judy Collins’ voice is as powerful and beautiful as ever. She was so funny sharing stories of her life and the people in the music industry that she continues to make music with. Her pianist Russell was wonderful too. It was a thoroughly entertaining evening listening to her old standards that we all love and some of her new music. I wish we could’ve had a meet and greet afterwards but I bought her CD albums.

  • I loved the concert. Judy's opening singer was great, but I was anticipating Judy. She looks as great as ever. 99.9% of her music was spot on, even though she had a few wavering notes and one flat note. I can forgive her, since her career is 60 years long and she is 80 years old. We had a great time, especially because the smartphone banishment was in effect.

  • Judy Collins can still knock your socks off with her voice. Her concert was fantastic, a must see and hear. She sang a great collection of songs; past, present and some that are a part of her Irish tour. She was very entertaining with stories from the early part of her career. The venue was perfect making this an evening to remember.
