Marvel Characters as Gold and Phantom Lanterns

Discussion

Seeing the posts of putting Marvel characters in the traditional 9 DC Green Lantern corps (plus Ultra Violet) made me think about the other recent corps, The Gold Lanterns, and the Phantom Lantern title; and who'd be best with those rings.

Quick criteria for consideration: • Gold (from my understanding) doesn't have a general emotion and is an evolution of the Green Lanterns. They are more based on a strong sense of Justice overall. • The Phantom Lantern Ring can channel every emotion from the emotional spectrum 1 at a time based on the users current emotion.

With that in mind I ask; Which Marvel Character do you think BEST fits for these rings?

For Phantom I'd say Dr Doom or Thanos. They have the right mix of emotional range and control to actually make using the Phantom Ring viable

Not bad picks. Certainly would like to see Doom as one. What about Gold?

Captain America probably. He's the poster boy for doing the right thing no matter what.

He's so stubborn about it that he started a whole Civil War and the Illuminati once brainwashed him to forget their more dubious activities because they just knew he wouldn't let it go. Cap is the man when it comes to no such thing as 'acceptable evil'

Very true, very dope answer

The phantom ring has no limits and would only really be effective in the hands of some one that has experience in regulating their emotions alot. So likely some one like Bruce Banner.

The Gold is a bit weird still but seem to require that you have experienced unbridled joy once in your life. Most marvel characters don't apply here. Ironman, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawk eye definitely have not. Thor and Captain America might have but it's unlikely. The Punisher, X-Men, and Scarlet Witch are drowning in so much other emotions that they likely wouldn't be compatible even if they met the prerequisite. Captain Marvel only counts if you include her weird dreamscape pregnancy. Think of that Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel has achieved this feat so she could have it.

I can see Bruce as a Phantom Lantern but I personally don’t see him adapting every emotion. L Ike he isn’t Greedy, I’d argue he’s not that hopeful or compassionate (outside of basic human ethics).

Gold lanterns aren’t actually based on Joy; that is a fanon misconception. They haven’t directly stated what powers the Gold Lantern but it is hinted that they are powered through “Justice Energy”. Either way, Kamala has a good head on her shoulders seeing her as a Gold Lantern would be neat.

The problem is that any emotion they experience will quickly run away from their control. While he can't control his anger or Fear, Hulk can handle that. If he gets a flash of Greed, compassion, hope or love he can quickly calm himself. Which is what makes him the best choice I can think of.

I was pretty sure that it was confirmed that the requirement to activate the ring is one moment of unfettered join. I kind of remember the panels. I believe Justice was the Fanon answer.

Either or I agree Kamala is a solid choice. Bruce too in the grand scheme of the Phantom Lantern

I’m very confused. I only have read with the traditional colors, Green Yellow Blue Red Pink Purple Orange Black and White. What are all of these other colors????

The Gold and Phantom Lanterns are fairly new (under a decade old) lanterns introduced. Phantom Lantern was introduced in 2017 during DC Rebirth and Gold Lantern was introduced in Legion of Superheroes 2019 I believe. The gold lantern is a 31st century evolution of the green lanterns and the phantom lantern is a specialty ring that can channel any emotion one at a time based on the users current emotional state.

u/Ok-Palpitation-4297 avatar

What about the one I saw that was a dark purple and it was like suppressed emotions or something like that, what is that?

That’s the Ultra Violet Corps, they were introduced in 2021 DC Universe Justice League i believe. They channel the repressed or unseen emotions of people like Shame, envy, guilt, etc.

Awesome! Very helpful, any others?

Justice as an emotion?! So a Lasagna Corp for characters craving Italian. Or a Couch Corp for people who just feel like binging a whole season of Supernatural today.

Not really an emotion more a term for what the corps represents.

Then they should stop making it about merchandise for one second and start a new club. Darkstars weren't lanterns and had enough clout and history for John Stewart to join, (in a different lifetime). They SHOULD NOT be lanterns. Let them be NewStars or ShadowKillers or something, but not Lanterns.

Dc really hasn’t done any merch for the other lanterns in a long time, at least from what I’ve noticed. And they certainly haven’t made any for any lantern corps past blackest night. I do wish they’d focus on at least expanding these concepts instead of being basic “color of the week” lantern corps or at the least give something unique about them.

I know he wouldn’t get one….

But justice… Punisher !

Gold - Nova? Captain America ? Blade ? 🤔

Gold lantern being referenced as justice instead of joy? Based alert Seems that golden lantern video of mine is really getting around

It was actually your video that inspired me to make this thread. Justice over joy was not something I picked up on while reading the book (I didn’t pick up joy either tbh) but it was such a intriguing concept that I thought I’d share it and see what everyone’s thoughts would be. Thanks for making that video btw, really solid work and definitely clears up some things for the Gold Lantern.

Gold ring easily goes to the Living Tribunal

Legion should have the Phantom Ring. That is about as chaotic as it gets.

Living tribunal doesn't need a power ring.

He doesn’t need one but nobody else embodies justice like him.

He is a God. He isn't even necessarily corporeal.

Edited

Quote about The Living Tribunal from Marvel’s devil, Mephisto:

“No, he's not God. He's just the biggest kid in all the playgrounds. And if he knows the principal, he's not exactly chatty about it.”

But yeah he was created by The One Above All and is the embodiment of multiversal Justice. He is canonically dead, so he isn’t even immortal. He was killed by the Beyonders.

After The Living Tribunal’s Death, The One Above All appointed Adam Warlock into the New Living Tribunal.

Wtf is a gold and phantom Lantern? Jesus I'm out of touch. It should've stopped at white and black.

Gold Lanterns are a new corps introduced in the Legion of Superheroes comics. Basically they’re a future evolved version of the Green Lanterns and have 1 member per universe. It’s debated what their emotion is but based on some evidence from the books it is an undefined energy that encompasses the entire emotional spectrum and more, “Justice Energy”.

The Phantom Lantern is a title introduced in Green Lanterns Rebirth and is a single ring which does not have a limiter and can access any emotion based on the current welders emotional state. It also can be used by anyone who wears it.

How many corps are there now!?!?!?

There’s the initial 9; Green, Red, Yellow, Blue, Violet, Indigo, Orange, Black and White • In 2016 DC Rebirth published Green Lanterns (series) which introduced the Phantom Lantern Ring (not a corps but post relevant) • In 2018 Justice League introduced the Ultra Violet Lanterns which are a corps that utilize repressed emotions; John Stewart became one. • And in 2019 the Legion of Superheroes story introduced the Gold Lantern as the 31st century future evolution of the Green Lantern Corps.

That makes (including Phantom) 12 corps but if you wanna have fun: • In Hal Jordan & the GLC #13 (2017) the book teased there to be an evil “Voltoom” Corps with thousands of rings flying through a portal but never went anywhere with it.

• In 1982 the Quardians (anti mater universe denizens) who waged war against the Green Lanterns as the “Anti Green Lantern corps”

• In 2008 Geoff Jahns made a subsection of the Gals called the Alpha Lantern Corps with its own oath and everything

• In 2018 Superman of China book the Ministry of Self-Reliance made a lantern corps for China

• In 2017 DC ran a limited series Green Lantern/Planet of the Apes which introduced the Universal Ring (basically the Phantom Ring but sentient) that made its own corps from itself

• There’s the Omega Lanterns which are a niche group of lanterns that are new gods related. Kyle Rayner became one when he was a white lantern and reflected grey cause of his neutrality. Jessica Cruz became one when she became possessed by Darkseid, and Roy Harper became one when a Black Lantern Ring became possessed by an evolved “great darkness” Darkseid

• There are the Darkstars (not a lantern corps but a corps) • There are the Effigy Corps (not a lantern but a 90s Kyle Rayner villain group)

• And in Marvel there’s the Nova Corps and the Deadpool corps (cause why not)

So in total (minus marvel) there are 20 “Lantern” corps. More than half of these are non canon/don’t exist anymore anyway so you only gotta concern yourself with the first 12. Hope this was educational: enjoy!🥔

This answer was EPIC!

Thanks!

There’s a golden lantern??

Yes, a very vague corps from the Legion of Superheroes book from post Death Metal (a similar story to crisis on infinite Earths) with few appearances after that. Basically they’re a 31st century Lantern Corps with 1 per dimension that (from my understanding) channel “Justice Energy” and are an evolution of the Green Lanterns. They were made by the same Guardians of the Universe who hyper evolved into these gold beings idk the name of.

Something Bendis I think, something about they’re what Green Lanterns are going to change into in the 31st century, don’t quote me on this. I barely kept up with that storyline.

They're from a terrible story

Maybe too on the nose, but for Phantoms: Fantomex. I don't fully understand the phantoms requirements. But going off of other people's choices, Fantomex has 3 separate brains with alter egos.

The Phantom Ring allows anyone to be any lantern based on their current emotional state. So someone who is stoic and has great willpower can be a green lantern, someone who is angry will be a red lantern, etc etc. It’s got no filter and no limiter so anyone can wear it and have unlimited power to use it.

The personality stuff that folks have been saying is a neat concept that can allow the Phantom welder channel multiple emotions since different minds control the Phantom Rings power. If this is still confusing I can try explaining it a bit more.

I think the point of the phantom ring is that there are no requirements

Then how do you even pick someone to suggest? I'm misunderstanding something

I don't know. The point is that it can be anyone. As far as I understand it, the ring doesn't even consider anyone as it's current owner, like other rings might do. If you take it off someone else can just put it on instead

Gold: Daredevil or Jessica Jones, Phantom: Moon Knight or Legion

I was waiting for someone to say Daredevil lol. Jessica Jones is an interesting choice tho, not who I’d consider. Moon Knight and Legion are definitely fitting the theme of Mentally unstable characters as the Phantom Lantern which I am all for concept wise.

Gold/Justice:She-Hulk Phantom:ForgetMeNot(X-Men)

The Jade Jezebel as a Gold Lantern is certainly an interesting idea, the concept of a Gold Lawyer Lantern isn’t lost on me.

And for Phantom you didn’t list anyone, who do you think?

Edited

I had an idea about someone for the Phantom ring but...

Damn, let us know if you find someone

For Phantom Lanterns anybody with schizophrenia or dissociative identity disorder like the Sentry, Hulk, or Green Goblin because they would use a different emotional spectrum depending on which personality was in control.

Gold Lantern, Silver Surfer, because why the f not for the lols

I never considered DID as a possibility for Phantom Lantern and would honestly be very interesting to see on page. Silver Surfer Gold Lantern is pretty cool concept wise but my only concern would be his sense of Justice, I’m personally not a Marvel guy so idk much on him. Imo maybe Indigo would be a better fit.

u/cheesechomper03 avatar

The Silver Surfer is one of Marvels most noble characters and he is insanely powerful. Of all the Marvel character that weren't universal gods he was the hero that Adam Warlock thought had the best chance at beating Thanos with the full infinity gauntlet.

Impressive; tho I’d honestly peg nobility for greater emotions like the of the main 9, Love, Hope, and Compassion, compared to the sense of Justice one might have but that’s just me. Either way though Silver Surfer could definitely do well with any corps ring he revived I imagine.

I thought Gold was Happiness? Admittedly I only read a small but if the Brian Michael Bendis Legion Of Superheroes run so I could definitely be wrong

I thought so too but this video changed my perception https://youtu.be/u0lJt4bxd3w?si=Si7jw08rQ1fOmvg9

Phantom: Galactus

Gold: Captain America

Interesting. Galactus as any lantern would be horrifying tbh. Cap. As a gold lantern would be sick honestly. It fits very well too.

I think Professor X would be good as gold. He’s always been about the ends justifying the means, even if it’s unpopular. Plus it’d match his hover chair.

Edit spelling

True lol, honestly not a bad pick. What about the Phantom Lantern?
