Summary

  • Executive producer Sam Esmail provides a promising update on Peacock's Battlestar Galactica reboot, revealing that he just read a "great outline" for the show.
  • The reboot was first announced back in 2019, but updates have since been hard to come by. With the WGA strike over, development work can now continue.
  • The show will be a reboot rather than a continuation, suggesting it will be a fresh take with an entirely new cast.

The announced Battlestar Galactica reboot gets a promising update from executive producer Sam Esmail. Serving as a reimagining of the 1970s cult sci-fi, Battlestar Galactica aired from 2004 to 2009. After several short-lived spinoffs and expansions, the series is next set to return as a reboot, with Peacock announcing the project back in 2019. Development on the reboot series accompanies work on a Battlestar Galactica movie, which has been stuck in development hell since around 2010.

Now, after many months of radio silence, Esmail provides an update on the Peacock Battlestar Galactica reboot in a recent interview with Deadline.

While the lengthy WGA strike may have prevented meaningful progress from taking place on the show over the summer, it sounds like things are still moving along. Check out Esmail's full comment below:

“Well, I can’t speak to the movie version, but for the TV series, we are working on it. And in fact, I just read a great outline and it’s in great shape. Because the strike is over now – at least the WGA strike is over – we’re back into developing it.”

Everything We Know About The Battlestar Galactica Reboot

Jamie Bamber points gun in Battlestar Galactica

Peacock's Battlestar Galactica revival was first announced back in 2019, but few updates have emerged about the project since. The biggest update so far remains the development that the show would be spearheaded by Esmail, who is best known for creating Mr. Robot and Homecoming. The executive producer's next project is actually a feature film, the sci-fi thriller Leave the World Behind.

As far as the Peacock reboot goes, however, there remain more questions than answers. The labeling of the project as a "reboot" rather than a continuation suggests that there won't be any original Battlestar Galactica cast members that return, which means audiences shouldn't expect to see favorites like Katee Sackhoff, Edward James Olmos, Jamie Bamber, James Callis, Grace Park, and Mary McDonnel, among others, make a comeback.

The plot of the Battlestar Galactica reboot appears to be largely staying true to its predecessors, following a group of human survivors who seek a new home planet after their twelve planets are destroyed by Cylons. Esmail is working on the series with Michael Lesslie, who will serve as showrunner. Despite Esmail's reassuring words about the Battlestar Galactica reboot, the show still hasn't been officially ordered to series, meaning there's still no guarantee that it will even happen.
