A matrimonial theme isn't the only thing Muriel's Wedding – a 1994 Australian film starring Toni Collette and Rachel Griffiths – has in common with Mamma Mia! Both films also feature soundtracks full of the music of ABBA. Mamma Mia! was first a stage musical, while Muriel's Wedding received a musical adaptation in 2016, and ran at the Rosly Packer Theatre in Sydney in late-2017.

While both films are musicals, tonally Les Miserables is very different from Mamma Mia!. It is an adaptation based on the 1862 French novel of the same name, by Victor Hugo.
