  • Director Francis Galluppi reveals how the original Evil Dead inspired him to pursue filmmaking as fun and attainable.
  • With a new film on the horizon, Galluppi expresses excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the iconic series.

Less than two weeks ago, it was reported that another Evil Dead spin-off film is in the works with The Last Stop in Yuma County director, Francis Galluppi, attached to direct. The news came as somewhat of a surprise, given that earlier this year a spin-off directed by Sébastien Vaniček was also announced. Now, Galluppi has commented on his Evil Dead movie, and why he’s such a fan of the series.

Speaking with Comicbook.com, Galluppi wasn’t able to go into any detail about his upcoming Evil Dead film, but he did say that he cares about the franchise. He says that going back to his youth, Evil Dead was one of those films that “made me want to make movies.” Check out his comments below.

"All I can really say is how much of a fan I am of Evil Dead and how much I really care about this franchise. It truly is one of the movies that made me want to make movies. I'm not just saying that."

He would go on to elaborate, saying that at the time he chose to pursue music instead of film, because "making movies seemed so unattainable." It wasn't until he saw Evil Dead did he realize that filmmaking was possible, because director Sam Raimi and star Bruce Campbell looked like they were having fun "making the thing they wanted to make." He says it was that movie that inspired him to make his own films, and the rest, as they say, is history. Galluppi calls the entire experience "exciting."

"I grew up watching Back to the Future and Indiana Jones and these huge spectacles and spent most of my life playing music because film, making movies seemed so unattainable, and there's something about the original Evil Dead that you could just tell that [director] Sam [Raimi] and Bruce [Campbell] were out there having so much fun making the thing they wanted to make. And it was so innovative, and that's really the thing that inspired me to go pick up a camera and get my friends together and go out and make a horror short."

"My office is covered in Evil Dead stuff. It's just very exciting. I'm really excited. Everyone at Ghost House is just great to work with."

Francis Galluppi Says Evil Dead Is His Comfort Movie

First released on October 15, 1981, Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead went on to become a favorite among horror fans. The low budget feature grossed eight times its production budget, and spawned two sequels, Evil Dead 2, and Army of Darkness. The franchise was revived in 2013 with Fede Álvarez's Evil Dead, which was a commercial and critical success. It was followed-up not with a theatrical sequel, but a television sequel series for Starz titled Ash vs. Evil Dead.

While the television show lasted for three seasons, fans were clamoring for another film on the big screen, and they got it in 2023 by way of Lee Cronin's Evil Dead Rise, which breathed new life into the franchise, and since then, the two spin-off films from both Galluppi and Vaniček have been announced. When asked which of the films might influence his own take on Evil Dead, the director couldn't pick just one.

"I like them all. I'm dead serious. I think that it's a perfect... they have not f-cked up any of the movies. They're all great, and I love them all for my own reasons. Obviously, Army of Darkness came out in a time, a perfect age for me, so I watched that a lot growing up, and Evil Dead had a huge impact on me when I was 18. And I love Fede [Álvarez's]. I love Lee [Cronin's]. They're all great. I really can't tell you. I feel like I always go back to the original Evil Dead. It's just a comfort movie for me. But with that said, I watch them all. Even the show. The show is great."

No plot details have been released at this time for Francis Galluppi's Evil Dead film, and casting announcements have yet to be made. However, given the fact that the director is such a fan of the franchise, it's safe to say it's in good hands going forward with both Galluppi and Vaniček providing their own takes on the iconic brand.

Evil Dead Rise is available to stream on MAX.
