Pretty but small campus. Lots of beautiful big old oak trees. Looks like a park setting. Very peaceful. Right on the ocean.

On a Winter day-trip from New Orleans, we stopped at the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Campus, primarily to see Friendship Oak, but to also walk the campus. Going way back, I knew this campus as Gulf Park College, a “finishing school” for young ladies. I walked this campus, or more accurately, some of the areas, where boys were allowed. I knew the waiting rooms in the dorms, like Hardy Hall, where we first had to “pass muster” in front of the house mothers in each – before they would even call up to the dorm room, to tell our date, that her escort was waiting downstairs. Things are different now, with some new buildings, and many of the old ones being re-purposed. Still, I did recognize some of the buildings, and my mind went into nostalgia mode – though not for long, as I was with my wife, who did NOT attend Gulf Park College, but knew of a few of my dates there, and had even met several of the young ladies, attending the college.

Obviously, she did not share my feelings of nostalgia, but I kept reassuring her that this was now an extension of the University of Southern Mississippi, the school I attended briefly in Hattiesburg, MS.

I did take her for a walk around, stopping at the lovely, and ancient Friendship Oak, and explained the history of it, and the story of lasting friendship, if folk stand in the tree’s shade.

The campus is lovely, and I was surprised to not notice any of the devastation from Hurricane Katrina.

For me, a fun trip down “memory lane,” and on this visit, I could walk many places, which I could not have done, when it was Gulf Park College. A lovely visit.

I live next to the University of Southern Mississippi campus in Long Beach, MS. It is a beautiful campus. I enjoy recreational walks through there quite often.

This small Campus of Higher Learning offers much diversity -- Senior Age Seminars, and even Jazz festivals.

This was my first visit to The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park campus since it was nearly destroyed from Hurricane Karina and the tornado. I am amazed on how the campus and grounds looks. The love and care that has gone into the repairs to Hardy Hall are breath-taking. Everything looks wonderful. The Mississippi Association of Educational Office Professionals hosted our 69th Annual Conference June 7-9, 2018. The scenery was gorgeous and the weather was superb. We had an awesome annual conference filled with knowledge and information to take back to share with our coworkers and administrators..

Situated on U.S. Hwy. 90 overlooking the white sand beaches of the Gulf of Mexico and dotted with magnificent live oak trees, USM's Gulf Park Campus has a stunningly beautiful location. The 1920s Spanish Colonial Revival Style Hardy Hall and Lloyd Hall were constructed for the former Gulf Park College for Women and are the campus' only two historic buildings to survive Hurricane Katrina.

There is a turtle pond in the back. We have also checked out items for my son who is in a wheelchair from the campus, such as, a beach wheelchair and a hand bike.

This beautiful campus was nearly destroyed by Hurricane Katrina but it was eventually built back as a gorgeous campus overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. The Friendship Oak sits on the south side of the campus. This oak is hundreds of years old. It's worth stopping to see.

Really nice admissions staff. They reminded me that southern hospitality isn't dead. Our family had been on the road since 5 in the morning we had a 2:30pm appointment for a campus tour. Anyhow we get there a little after 4 looking like a tailor had just sewn us together. These women were so sweet. We offered to come back the next day, but they wouldn't hear of it. They said the best thing for us to do would be to get their campus toured that day so maybe tomorrow we could take our daughter to the Hattiesburg campus the next day. Thankfully we weren't to tired and the tour didn't take much more than an hour, and we did go to Hattiesburg the next day.

The Friendship Oak tree is located on the front lawn of the Southern Miss Gulf Park campus in Long Beach, Mississippi. In the last decade, the historic Friendship Oak survived Hurricane Katrina, another in a long string of hurricanes that have challenged yet never defeated the 500+ year old live oak tree.

A plaque has this inscription: "I am called the Friendship Oak. Those who enter my shadow will remain friends through all their lifetime."
