Blockbuster Director Roland Emmerich Gets Engaged To Boyfriend Omar De Soto

Emmerich helmed "Independence Day," "Universal Soldier" and "Stonewall."

Blockbuster director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, Stargate) has gotten engaged to Omar de Soto, his boyfriend of eight years.

Emmerich, 61, revealed he was the one who popped the question to his 28-year-old beau, though he previously never thought of himself as the marrying kind. "That was always too conforming with society," he told the German Press Agency (DPA). "It felt a little bourgeois."

The couple are expected to tie the knot this summer in L.A., though no date has been set. "We’re trying to do it as relaxed as possible," said Emmerich.

In 2015, he received sharp criticism for Stonewall, his account of the 1969 uprising, which many felt whitewashed the role of LGBT people of color in favor of a cisgender, white, middle class protagonist. (The film was also critically panned.)

Emmerich is best known for action and disaster flicks including Universial Soldier, The Day After Tomorrow, and the more recent Independence Day: Resurgence.
