The Marquessate of Hamilton was held by the male line of the Dukes of Hamilton from 12 Apr 1643 until 12 Sep 1651, when, on the death of William [Hamilton], 2nd Duke of Hamilton without male heirs, the Marquessate of Hamilton, together with the Scottish titles of Lord Hamilton (cr. 1445), Lord of Aven and Earl of Arran (both cr. 1599), and Lord of Aberbrothwick (cr. 1608) and the English titles of Baron of Innerdale and Earl of Cambridge (both cr. 1619), became extinct.  The older Earldom of Arran (cr. 1503) probably became dormant at this time.
