Emery Community Arts Center invites artists to submit their work for consideration in our upcoming thematic exhibition, "The Thinking Hand." The forthcoming exhibit will feature a survey of contemporary artworks in multiple media that engage the legacies of craft and the poetics of technique and process as methods of material exploration and storytelling.
The exhibition borrows its title from Juhani Pallasmaa’s book, The Thinking Hand: Existential and Embodied Wisdom in Architecture. Throughout this influential text, Pallasmaa analyzes, “the essence of the hand and its seminal role in the evolution of human skills, intelligence and conceptual capacities,” and proposes that, rather than the mind being the solitary control center of imagination, “….perhaps, it is the hand that really imagines as it exists in the flesh of the world, the reality of space, matter and time, the very physical condition of the imagined object.” Artists are encouraged to submit 2D, 3D or time-based works that engage physical processes, material exploration and/or new approaches to traditional techniques as foundational elements in building form, meaning and/or narrative in the artwork.
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Friday, May 24th, 2024
The exhibition will be on view from June 21st - August 9th, 2024 at Emery Community Art Center, University of Maine at Farmington.

Art in Odd Places 2024: CARE / Open Call for Proposals
Public Art & Proposals
- Submission Deadline: May 26, 2024
- Event Dates: October 18, 2024 - October 20, 2024
- Award Info: CARE invites artists to offer stations of care across the festival, where all are invited to stop, to rest, to CARE.
- Eligibility: International

- Location: New York, New York, United States
Care is a ripple. From intimate to global, from self-care, care of family and lover, friend and neighbor, town and city, state and country, the global world, care undulates out to our whole island planet and every species upon it. To care is to look after, provide for, to watch over, to grieve, to lament, to cry, to feel concern, to attach importance. In a year of political turmoil, war, and environmental devastation, how wide can our caring arms be embraced? Who can we give care to? What can we care about? What can we watch over? What and who can we be careful about? Who is deemed worthy of care? What is appropriate care? When is care invasive? Should we care? Can we not care? Do we have that luxury? How can we give protective attention, caution, concern, and prudence? Can we extend care beyond our bodily, familial, national, species, and earthly borders? AiOP 2024 asks how art can create spaces and actions of compassionate fearless care. Can we offer and enter them with joy and love?
Art opens a space of empathy – an invitation to see through the eyes and heart and mind of another. An act of hope and imagination – art can help us dream new ways and new worlds into being. We invite you to imagine together how we can bring care to one another and our fraught and fragile world.
AiOP CARE invites artists, performers, agitators, and caretakers to enact notions of care along 14th Street NYC. We are looking for individuals, collectives, and collaborators, and those interested in collaborating with like-minded folks to design new team projects for the festival. CARE invites artists to offer stations of care across the festival, where all are invited to stop, to rest, to CARE.
Patricia Miranda and Christopher Kaczmarek are NYC-based artists, curators, and educators. Miranda is founder of the artist-run orgs The Crit Lab and MAPSpace, and works with donated, repurposed, lace and linens in site-responsive sculpture and installation. Kaczmarek’s work spans both experimental and traditional practices, including sculpture, site-specific installations, performance, video, built circuits and solar-powered objects.

Joshua Tree National Park Artist in Residence Program
Residency
- Submission Deadline: May 31, 2024
- Entry Fee: Application fee is $35. Additional residency fees may apply.
- Eligibility: International
- Categories: Craft/Traditional Arts, Photography, Drawing, Film/Video/New Media, Mixed-Media/Multi-Discipline, Painting, Sculpture
- Location: Twentynine Palms, California 92277, United States
The purpose of the Joshua Tree National Park Artist in Residence Program is to provide opportunities for artists to creatively explore the resources of Joshua Tree National Park, promoting a deeper appreciation of the natural, cultural, and historical resources therein.
Artists are an important part of the national park system. Writings, paintings, photographs, and public outreach provide opportunities for new audiences to experience national parks. In the era of virtual visits, the role of artists is more important than ever in sharing unique perspectives of national parks with online audiences.
The Joshua Tree National Park Artist in Residence Program (AiR) is open to visual artists, performing artists, musicians and writers. Artist are invited for a one-month stay in fall or spring. There are two objectives for this residency. One is to give artists time to explore the park and pursue their own creative practice. The second is for the artist to share their unique perspective of the park’s resources with others.
Accommodations and Working Conditions
Artists in residence are housed at Black Rock in the northwest corner of the park. This area has a ranger station, a campground and access to many beautiful trails. Sitting at the base of the San Bernardino mountain range, its higher altitude makes this area one of the best for Joshua Trees and somewhat cooler than other parts of the park. Although conditions at this location are often relatively temperate, artists should be prepared for more extreme conditions during the course of their stay, including high winds, low relative humidity and temperatures that can range from 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the day to as low as 30 degrees at night.
Artists sleep in the studio space in the Black Rock Campground, which is furnished with a twin bed and bureau. The studio has a drafting table, several folding tables, and ample natural light. Public toilets are adjacent to the studio space. Shared kitchen, laundry, and bathing facilities are a short walk or drive from the studio at the Interagency Fire Center. The distance between the sleeping space and the kitchen and bathing facility is less than half a mile. The town of Yucca Valley is about a 10 minute drive away and has a variety of shopping and dining as well as medical facilities.
Though housing is provided, artists are responsible for their own expenses such as meals, personal art supplies, transportation, etc. Only one occupant is allowed at any time in housing. Park policy prohibits bringing pets.
Donation of Work to the Joshua Tree National Park Collection
At this time, work is not being accessioned into our museum collection. Therefore, artists are asked to share high-quality, digital images of any works produced as a result of their time in residence with the park, with permission to reproduce the images for the purposes of sharing work created through the residency with the public. Credit will be given to the artist any time the work is reproduced for this purpose.
Black Rock Art Gallery
The gallery is located in the Black Rock Nature Center and exists as a as a space for presenting contemporary interpretations of themes related to the park. Exhibitions are made by selected Artists in Residence as well as community and other artists.

The Eliza Moore Fellowship for Artistic Excellence is awarded annually to one outstanding, early-career artist who is developing new works that address plants, gardens, or landscapes in the broad sense. This award is open to visual artists, literary artists, dancers, and musicians. The award includes a $10,000 individual grant and requires a 2 - 5 week stay at Oak Spring. While at OSGF, the Fellow will be able to meet with staff, explore our 700-acre landscape and our efforts in sustainable land management, and visit our rare book library that holds over 19,000 objects, including many examples of botanical art.
OSGF intends to award the Fellowship to an exceptional artist whose works show remarkable promise to contribute to a deeper understanding of the natural world, and humankind’s place in it. The Fellow will be scheduled to visit when there are other Interdisciplinary Residents or Fellows on-site. This scheduling will allow the Fellow to join in communal meals, and optional activities and field trips with other artists, ecologists, researchers, or scholars working on projects related to OSGF’s mission. Beyond time devoted to their projects, a Fellow’s typical day at Oak Spring might include a walk to enjoy the landscape or birds; an appointment to visit the Oak Spring Library; and/or a morning spent volunteering at the BCCF or in the formal garden. These optional activities provide Fellows time to learn from, and interact with our staff. None of these activities are required, and we understand that some Fellows might want to spend most of their time in their writing or working independently. We support and enable Fellows to use their time as they best see fit.

Causability recognizes that creatives are often asked to donate their art or time to nonprofits without payment. This mindset can contribute to an undeserved or ‘starving artist’ stereotype.
We are changing this.
By empowering creatives, nonprofits and communities can benefit much more from collaborating together on a project rather than just creatives one-time ‘gifting’ their art away.
Therefore, we’re offering three $5K grants to empower and encourage cause collaboration:
Each grant is $5000.00 providing creatives the ability to collaboratively develop an creative related event, program or fundraiser with a local nonprofit.

We invite you to submit your work to the 22nd DongGang International Photo Festival, to be held this year from July 12th to September 29th, 2024 in Yeongwol, Gangwon State, Korea.
This year's theme;
Silently Loud
From nature's perspective, humanity itself is a form of hell. That is because of the tendency of humans to objectify and judge everything according to their own standards, thereby ignoring the natural world's intrinsic order. This one-sided disregard for the non-human elements around us is another form of disconnection and isolation, which can be seen as a definition of hell. Despite this, nature maintains a remarkable selflessness. It is driven solely by the instinct for survival, unmoved by human perspectives. To humans, nature’s struggle for survival seems unforgiving akin to the concept of hell. What if we shifted our perspective to see nature from its own vantage point and cultivated an attitude in harmony with it? Then, we would realize that nature has never been hellish, not for an instant.
Humans at times fail to acknowledge the presence of nature. We are inherently part of nature, yet often, we elevate ourselves to the status of the main characters, forgetting our intrinsic connection to the natural world. From birth, nature serves as a backdrop, an external influence shaping our lives. Yet, this omnipresent environment leads us to prioritize ourselves, neglecting nature in the process.
This competition aims to take a closer look at the existential boundaries and lives of humans from an ecosystem perspective, focusing on highlighting our interconnectedness. It is our hope that the beautiful relationship between humans and nature, expressed through photography, will come to fruition and be manifested on a greater scale.
Individuals and collectives are welcome to apply;
individuals should submit between 8 - 12 photographs from a particular series or body of work.

Opened in 2014, the park’s gentle walkway curves around a pond, showcasing view of local wildlife and artwork, like the painted PVC pipes of “The Trees of Life” that rise from the water, and Buddy Olson’s giant welded steel bear named “Ursus.”
We now invite the next generation of artists to exhibit their work in our public park.

- Award Info: three Awardees to receive unrestricted funds of $15,000
- Eligibility: Local
- Categories: Craft/Traditional Arts, Photography, Drawing, Mixed-Media/Multi-Discipline, Painting, Sculpture

The Artadia Awards provide financial support, exposure and recognition to artists. The awards are unrestricted, allowing artists to use the funds in any way they choose.
Each year, an open-call application is made available in each of the seven active partner cities. Supporting artists equitably is a critical part of the Artadia Award process: we consider the unique populations of each community and are proud to reflect our country’s diversity with an Awardee pool that is over 50 percent female and over 40 percent persons of color.
In addition to financial support, Awardees can participate in the Artadia Network to receive structured opportunities for valuable new connections and resource sharing as well as receive a dedicated webpage on Artadia’s online Artist Registry. Connections fostered by Artadia have facilitated major steps in Awardees’ careers, such as inclusion in prominent exhibitions (e.g. five Awardees were featured in the 2017 Whitney Biennial, and six in 2019).
