Rebecca St. James on Why Faith-Based Movies are Connecting with Audiences

Rebecca St. James discussed UNSUNG HERO and why she believes the world needs faith-based movies now more than ever.

“It was such a dramatic time for us coming from Australia to the U.S.,” St. James told CBN News about why her family made the movie. “My dad losing everything, you know, us living by faith and praying and seeing God do miracles.”

“I mean, it was a real world-changing, you know, time for our family, and it gave me a testimony really, and so I think, you know, when they had this sense about the timing is right,” she continued. “The team really came together and, you know, it’s a powerful film.”

Movieguide® praised the movie’s “Very strong Christian, biblical, moral worldview with characters manifesting sacrificial love, faith, honor, and courage through various trials.”

Part of the review reads:

UNSUNG HERO is a powerful, compelling story of faith and family, told with lots of sincerity and heart. The acting and writing is very good and convincing. UNSUNG HERO has a strong Christian, biblical worldview. The family’s Christian faith is not only clear from their repeated prayers to Jesus to guide and provide for them, but also from their infectious enthusiasm and spiritually uplifting song lyrics.

St. James believes that movies like UNSUNG HERO are finding a strong footing in America as more and more audiences are looking for uplifting, faith-based stories. She believes it is a sign of society as a whole being interested in Christianity and allowing entertainment to be their first leg in.

“I’m glad this story is being told because I think it’s needed for such a time as this. I mean, we’re in such a chaotic culture, and there’s so much going on, and yet this story about family and faith and trusting God, that’s what we need right now,” she said. “We need to big bold stories.”

“I think there is this kind of momentum in the arts that is kind of ground that’s being regained I would say when it comes to faith,” she added. “I think of JESUS REVOLUTION and how strong that was. I think I CAN ONLY IMAGINE, I think of how with that film, you know, people were coming out to see the film on drugs. I mean it was beautiful.”

“Last night, I was at a theater, and there were 14 different screenings of [UNSUNG HERO], and each one of them was full, and so I think people are hungry for these messages, and when we show up in the theater, we say to Hollywood that we need more of this. We need more family content. We need more clean content. We need more God-honoring content,” St. James continued. “And so it’s a very exciting day seeing what God is doing in the arts. And as Christians, reclaiming that and doing it with excellence.”

UNSUNG HERO landed the No. 3 spot at the box office last weekend.

“From Mum and the Unsung family, thank you so much for making the movie #3️⃣ in America three weeks into its release! 🎬 Let’s make every day of Mother’s Day! 💕😊,” for KING + COUNTRY posted.

Rebecca St. James, whose family’s story inspired UNSUNG HERO, is sharing how the movie will encourage more faith-based content from Hollywood.

St. James posted a throwback photo of her in the studio “in the late 90’s.”

“UNSUNG HERO era! Thank you SO much to all of you who have supported the film this last week by watching it in the theater,” she wrote. “Your huge support means there will be many more films made with God-honoring content like this. Thank you!!!”
